E71 tool tray
Not that they'll ever be used in anger, i just like everything complete, and its clear i have some items missing. The handbook doesnt show pictures, so, could someone oblige me with one?
I seem to recall reading about an allen key for emergency closure of the sunroof, i definitely don't have one of those

Re: E71 tool tray
Small spanner 10and 13mm ends, locking wheel nut key , red t handle for park brake and a towing eye if it's same as x5 which is think it is.
Re: E71 tool tray
Not all get the T-handle. Early ones did but not later ones as ZF removed the emergency release point on their gearboxes. If there is a reset port below the left front cup holder (take the rubber mat out and remove the cover) then you should have the T-handle.

Re: E71 tool tray
I thought the red handle was to release the E-brake if it could not be released normally.
Re: E71 tool tray
It does that too, but BMW still deleted the handle when the gearbox changed and expected owners to find something else. Probably saved them 0.000001p per car >:(

Re: E71 tool tray
Help appreciated. It seems only a spanner is missing, and i had wondered what the red T bar was all about. Now i know.
I understood there may be an Allen key missing but evidently not ☺

Mine has a screwdriver also which I assume is to remove the screws that hold the cover over the battery.

Re: E71 tool tray
Case closed your honor ! I don't have a sunroof so that would explain it lol or a nice space saver spare like that either , I put a single rear 21 in the main boot and it was almost full ! I struggled to get a 4 in with the seats folded down ...
Re: E71 tool tray
Interesting, but that item isn’t shown in Realoem against the X6, and I didn’t get one when the car was brand new.
Need to look at the manual to see if there is an emergency close function. There was for the pan roof, but the E71 doesn’t have a pan roof.
EDIT - definitely the same emer close as the E70. Need the part number for that key now as I don’t have one either.

Re: E71 tool tray
Our friends at Cotswold BMW couldnt help with a part # for an E71, maybe enquiring for an E70 is the way to go?
I established its a 4mm allen at each end but have watched a few Youtube clips when the same tool has a 4mm head at one end and a screwdriver blade at the other to prise out the roof panel. I found a used one of those on eBay for £5.00. It seems its not exclusive to BMW, VAG and others use something similar, as long as its the right size head It will do the same job. I wonder what a new one from BMW costs, £10+??

Re: E71 tool tray
The car manual shows a fold down release handle at the front of the overhead binnacle (same for the E70) and mine has such a handle. Not sure how easy it is to fold down, but it then releases the complete assembly.
If it’s a 4mm head then I’ll carry a better operated screwdriver to fit a 4mm tool onto. Probably just as cheap as a BMW OEM Allen key!
The E46 uses a similar tool to shut its convertible roof, although the book warns that it takes 10,000 turns! Not sure if that really is right though, unless it’s needed for the hydraulic pump
EDIT Found the beggar on Realoem. It was in a completely different section related to the sunroof.
Part number is: 54137199324 Emergency Tool Electric, sliding roof
It is used on loads of BMW Models and Mini’s.

Re: E71 tool tray
Sherlock Sport solves the unanswered question, interesting that Cotwold BMW couldn't find that part though.
In one Youtube clip i watched the mesh cover was pulled down first and the 'inner' panel subsequently. That reveals an allen socket directly on the motor. My cars not here at the moment its off being valeted and detailed, hope to have it back on Tuesday, so i can't see it or even the owners manual currently.
Regardless, I'm happy to have the means to close the sunroof in the event of a power failure.
