Debate (no not Masturbate Mogs!) - why did you buy the X5 ?
Debate (no not Masturbate Mogs!) - why did you buy the X5 ?
I am just wondering why people have bought their X5 in the past or even have new cars on order now?
The trend seems to be to shy away from these anti social monsters as people realise that normal cars are much nicer.
There are two current members that I can think of that have gone from E53 to E60/E61.
I won't be buying another and I will be in a proper car again as soon as the manufacturer opens the order books.
I bought the X5 because the 535d was so good I fancied basically the same car but thought I would try the bigger version with the added benefit of 4 wheel drive. I probably regret it and they only time it has really paid dividends was the snow this year but I don't think it was any better than our 4x4 TT.
And before PVR says it, yes I do have a great big 4x4 in the US but they are kind of different over there, fit in better, cheaper to run and we take it skiing with family/friends and clobber
So why did you buy yours?

Re: Debate (no not Masturbate Mogs!) - why did you buy the X
I love my X5 - albeit an E53. I loved them the day they came out - totally different from anything else at the time. I wanted one ever since and decided to take the plunge just over 3 years ago. I haven't owned a better car probably never will. Yes it has it's faults, but what car doesn't...
I like the toys in mine, the driving position, not actual but the high up one, I like the road holding for such a big car and I like the status (it has one, positive or negative, owning a BMW is still perceived to be an achievement). Above all else was the safety aspect with a young one at the time and now now our second one. I know they are relatively safe in this over a car - although safety is constantly improving and leaving this one behind.
To be honest I think the forum has also made it 10 times more enjoyable to own. You freak out when something goes wrong and sh!t yourself at how much it will cost you but you know a forum like this will try to help where it can with advice and Indy specialists like Jason. Hope I haven't jinxed it now!

Read the thread again chap - Sanj seems to understand what I am saying
My point is why an X5 over a 5 series as example. Still a BMW if you are caught in the BMW bug.
my 535d was exactly the same as the X5 - to colour spec etc. The X5 cost £5k more (there will be a relative prices increase in there of course over 3 years), uses much more fuel, doesn't fit in as many parking spaces etc.............

Re: Debate (no not Masturbate Mogs!) - why did you buy the X
Mrs PVR had a 320 Touring before, and with a dog and the children growing up it was impossible to get them in (very cramped). The 5 at the time was also pretty cramped in the back and still had the bulge in the middle at the back where people would like their feet.
Driving position (height) great, and also the 5 touring was actually longer then the X5 so Mrs PVR didn't want to drive a bigger car. The X3 was rather ugly and cheap looking at the inside at the time and the price difference too small to justify that.

I did read the thread CHAP ...... it was just most of it was having a pop at the X5 so i was just clearing things up
As for the headline i bought mine due to having a daughter and the space in an M3 was just never going to work. I always loved the X5 and fancied a 4x4 but never thought i would own one and with the toys (tv's ect) it fits my needs so well.............also as Sanj said i feel so safe carrying my precious cargo

Bought mine cos the Porsche was shite in the snow Wanted a Range Rover but the build quality was crap and then her indoors said "what about an X5?"
So I test drove 1 and bought it there and then..... Nothing better than sitting up the arse of a lane hog with the xenons blinding them then booting it and leaving them standing

Re: Debate (no not Masturbate Mogs!) - why did you buy the X
I bought mine because I phoned a dealer about a top spec X3 they had (wife wanted a 4x4), guy said 'its sold, but I have a nice X5'! Did my research, realised the X5 is a much better car, and bought it. It was the nicest car I had ever driven IMO, absolutely loved it! I never thought I would own an X5, I was even one of those who use to snear at 4X4 drivers in London! but once you get behind the wheel, it all makes sense. Its not built to off-road, its built for ultimate family luxury and 'normal' usability and is a safe pair of hands for a family.
However, we have now sold the X5 due to needing to release some money (bloody recession!) , bought an older 330i M Sport Touring, and I have to say, I feel a bit more relaxed in the 3. Its cheaper for starters (nothing to do with the model I know), but I'm less worried about it. The (wide) X5 was always parked on tight London streets, the wife loved it but could never park it, and I was always dreading that big bill (tyres/ Pan roof failure etc). Plus I did miss the speed and agility of a quick car, the X5 performed brilliantly, but you can't throw it around as much as a 330.
So out of circumstance, I've sold the X5, but as soon as I am able to, I will buy another one, but not until I can afford a house with a driveway! (those on here from London will understand what I mean), and it will be the family long runner, holidays to France etc.
Finally, kind of felt I was a big young for an X5 as well, I'm 35, and only just got a baby on the way. The 3 is more my style right now. I think the X5 is more 40+ with 2 or more kinds. Hope I've not insulted anyone there! Just my opinion. I'll be getting another one when I'm 40 +1 day!

I would consider you more advanced in life than me then Pewters!
I need to save a few more pennies!
I still reckon the X5 demographic is around the 40 mark, anyone else have an opinion?

Arrr, I see you have the 4.6! What a machine! and quicker 0-60 by 0.3secs than my 330i. But surely a bit of understeer with that big old V8 in the front!
I only had the 3.0 petrol, but I did find the limit a few times when going into a corner a bit hard!

Re: Debate (no not Masturbate Mogs!) - why did you buy the X
I bought one because the previous model just looked fantastic (can't get on with the looks of the current model).
I then got a 4.8iS to replace 2 cars, at the time I had a 996 and a 3.0D M Sport X5 and to be honest noise wise it was great. Drive wise, the 4.8 is tiring to drive hard and sucks fuel.
I've been out of an X for 3 years, but recently bought Mrs M an X3, and damn fine it is too!
I probably won't go back to an X5, not because I don't like them, I just fancy something different. As. Car, they are good as they get, unfortunately the press don't always agree and simply knock the car for the sake of knocking it.
Masturbate......whatever do you mean
