Just joined the forum, bought a 2009 black x5sd after 12 years of an e46 330d which has sadly died due to terminal rust in the back end ! A great car that will be sorely missed but warming to the new to me x5 .

Hello and :hi:

I’ll keep an eye on our E46 330d ‘vert’ as it’s of similar age (but stored) in case metal moth makes a drastic appearance!  Which bits got eaten?

No rust on mine anywhere...she's 14yrs old, 330ci vert...but she is in bed 6mths of the year and has only once seen a wet road in a freak shower...

Likewise.  Gets wet accidentally, and now put to bed with a battery conditioner.  Definitely not out in the salty weather  :nono:

Not seen any rust above or below, but always wary just in case there are any known bad spots.  Apart from breaking rear springs, it’s had a dodgy starter replaced along with one of the two ABS/DSC brake pressure regulator switches on the master cylinder that went intermittent.

We’ll not mention my diy disaster with the gearbox  :o :-[ :cry1: :cry1: :cry1:  (which is now far better than when new).

Right in front of the diesel tank there are little box sections either side the tank mounts off these just crumbled away both rear jacking points holed when poked and the outer sill has a big hole behind the plastic cover hidden away. E46's tend to go in the drivers rear arch area much worse than passenger side I've found.
The car had rust but the last winter just ate it up as it was still sound a year ago.
Car was high mileage (201k) mechanically fine but anybody with one in all year round use would be well advised to apply some waxoyl before its too late .

Some pics :
2009 x5sd m sport with beige leather on 20's,xenon lights and reverse cam. 1 owner fsh, 128k. My wishlist was sd, black , msport ,panroof and towbar  but this came up without the roof which I understand can be trouble as they age and no towbar but will get one fitted .
Got 2 coats of collinite on , 2x coats autoglym polish then 2 of high shine polish , treated the leather with leather balm .Have order some new discs for the front as they are quite rusty and some brighter angel eye bulbs.Need to get a spare wheel and get the wheels refurbed some time.
Paintwork generally very good apart from the plastic rear arches and very end of sideskirts has a lot of stone chipping so will probably get the plastic arches repainted soon.

Found I have heated seats and adaptive xenon lights  8), bet those are expensive if they go wrong ! , only noticed as I put the switch to auto lights and while I was parking could see the beam move  8) and I've managed to get the mirrors to dip again when reverse is selected ... :P
Got another little surprise today someone gave my rear bumper corner a light scuff when I was away as they pulled out from a parking space ,luckily nothing is broke and t-cut dealt with most of it leaving a couple of tiny scores . Don't park near a school at chucking out time ,its not even our school as I was taking my daughter out early to see the nurse and when there I always park well away and walk to it to avoid this. :(
Getting a towbar fitted soon too to give them something to park against  :)) Also got some genuine rubber mats and bootliner as the beige velour won't last the winter .

Have tried to buy 3 used space savers but no deal yet , cheaper to buy new going by ebay prices !!!!!!!! but I did managed to get a jack and tools wheel chocks for an e53 which is perfect although the wrench is 19mm not 17mm , all other scissor jacks the handle would be under the car sill due to the way the saddle is 90 degrees out from where you need it to be to wind the handle (once you use one you will understand )
