hello all,
My mission to buy a mid-life crisis car went from SLK or Z4 (posted here sometime back) to Porsche Boxter to Merc E350 cab to now finally in the process of purchasing a BMW 640i
The pre-owned 2011 car just came into the dealership is still being 'prepared' by BMW, est. 1 1/2 weeks before i get it into my hands.
In the meanwhile would like to know if anybody has any experience with the F12, any pitfalls to watch out for..
Appreciate all words of wisdom

The only pitfalls are:
Everyone will hate you......
)
Jealous? Me? Nah....
I very very very nearly bought a 640d back when I ordered the F46 220xD as there were some really silly offers on brand new cars back in May (and probably still are). May be next time as our little man will be that much older. Then again perhaps and 8-series convertible may beckon.... O:-)

[emoji23] I'm used to being hated - having had an X5 for long enough lol
Btw I can't believe u bought an F46[emoji12] I'm guessing u r loving it.
I so wanted to buy the Merc E350. Head was saying Merc but the heart kept insisting it had to be the beamer.

I think we are going through our ‘sensible’ phase.
It is an M Sport though, with sport automatic and xDrive. ‘Sensible’ has limits (and we still have the other two cars as well so not a total loss
)

Hi
Definitely looks nice and tidy and probably a mid life crisis car but hey you have to do it otherwise you can easily regret the missed opportunity.
You just need to wait for the summer and hot weather

Looks really nice! Love the SE spec with those wheels - they make the car. I don't think there's really much to look out for on these. Lots of electrics in them though, that would be my only worry over the years!

thanks yeah, I do love the wheels... it is a rough ride being 20"s with runflats.. not that I care much
electronics, turbo, gearbox etc are standard worries I guess, plus the roof. I have a BMW warranty to hopefully save myself

Absolutely lovely!
How does the engine in the 640i compare to the engine in the A7? We have an A6 with the same engine that is in your A7, want to know which one you think is better...
Or am I being sacrilegious?

Lol, I now also have a merc too so I can compare all 3
Nice to hear of your A6, I’ve learnt that Audi stopped shipping those petrol V6s this way pretty early on. So they’re a rare commodity. The 640 has one of BMW’s most regarded straight 6 engines - N57.
On paper the 640 has more horses and more torque, but heavier and 0.1sec slower from 0 - 60.
the A7 feels much more instant in terms of trottle response. It gears down and takes off pushing the head onto the headrest. Beamer also gears down maybe even more readily, makes a far better sound but the take off is less instant. The difference might be the A7’s duel clutch vs the 640’s sports auto.
A7 is also overall a very highly refined car in comparison. The ride, the interior, the drive..
The A7’s engine sound was horrible. 640 sounds so good in comparison I often drive with music switched off!
I must add, I drive mostly in sports mode, both cars (why buy a 3L petrol and be stingy on fuel
)

Definitely, there is very few of these A6s with the 3.0T engine. Have taken a ride in a N55 engined car, not a 6 series though, can definitely say that it's a much better sounding car. The Audi is extremely refined overall, very quiet engine that disappears at motorway speeds, quite sublime actually. Doesn't have that straight 6 howl however. I guess throttle response is down to the Quattro system, these cars are really immediate things and don't hesitate when provoked. I guess the dual clutch in yours makes it a bit quicker than ours, its the conventional ZF 6 speed auto in ours, but isn't that much slower haha.
I'm gonna guess turbocharged vs supercharged comes into play here. Alarmingly it gets a better range than the X5, about 430-450 miles from an 80l tank vs about 490 miles from a 100l tank!
You're right about sports mode haha, the Audi barely does about 2k miles a year so not bothered about fuel on that anyway!
