Driver door handle

I've just gone to open the driver door and there was a click from the handle and the door didn't open. Handle just lifts up but doesn't do anything now. Door still opens from inside normally. Doors still lock etc.
What has broken and how do I fix it?
Thanks in advance.

Common problem...two went on my e53...door handle carrier, you have to take the door card off etc, instructions can be found on the net, carriers can be found on ebay (get the right one they are handed), dont buy too cheap or it will happen again...door will open from the inside or you can use the all open function on the fob.....here you go, click on the two blue highlighted text for instructions prior to this:

There’s a how to thread on the forum, sanj has put his original pics back on and I copied some from a US site that gives a lot of pics, there’s also a guide to pelican parts detailed how to a few posts down this page

Fixed. Easy. The little cable had snapped at one end. I even had four bottles of San Miguel whilst doing it. That means it took 1 hour...

A novel way of counting time, I think I’ll try it

As a side note. The door air bag does not need to be removed. It can be unbolted, turned upside down and 180 deg then loosely bolted back on via the bottom hole on the door. Voilà.

I've just remembered though that I forgot to reconnect the cable to the door handle light..
