Back-up for using non-flats

Need 2 - maybe 3 - new tyres and want to go non-run flat (NRF) for comfort.

What should I carry as a back-up in case one does blow? Won't be able to carry a spare wheel - maybe a can of that 'slime' stuff which you can fill a tyre up with incase it blows?

What do you folks with NRF's do if you dont have a spare wheel?

You could install Puncturesafe in each wheel.  Water based rubber system that can seal holes up to 5mm.  Used in my motorbike and survived a couple of nasties which sealed and needed no work.

It’s used by Caravaneers, Police and Ambulance services.

You deflate the tyre, remove the valve, put this stuff in, insert the valve, reinflate and go for a short drive.  It coats the whole tyre inside.  Tyre fitters are fine with it because it just wipes away.  It only sets when exposed to the atmosphere.

Has a compressor too, which means dont have to bother topping up air pressures at the petrol stations as routine annoyance!

I use Puncturesafe on my 4 tyres,(thankyou X5sport) I cannot carry a spare as the lpg donut occupies the spare wheel space.
Well pleased all I can say is never had a flat tyre!!!!

Had a flat on the second day of ownerside , nail in the tyre  (on non runflats and no spare) and the fuse for the 12v socket had blown too so had to get another car to get the electric to pump up the tyre to get to the tyre fitters .
  Id like a full sized front spare (20's fitted) but as it doesn't fit in the boot a space saver might be bought but these are expensive new for what they are , I could have a used set of 19's with tyres for little more ! No jack either to make things more tricky.

Hi Alan, I put that number in realoem and its listed for an
X5 E53   (01/2001 — 09/2006)
X5 F15   (08/2012 — 06/2018)
X6 F16   (09/2013 — 07/2018)

but not an e70 though I'm sure they should all be the same fitment .The problem is the tyre may look new but could be up to 17 years old if off an e53  and I'm sure a new tyre is a silly price !

X5sport those are the ones I've seen on ebay about £250 to buy.

My e53 is 16 years old and came with a full size spare wheel.

It had space under the floor too.  When BMW switched to RFT around 2006 they stopped providing a spare.  Most manufacturers have done the same - I had to pay for one for my Škoda - because it’s cheaper (for them) and reduces weight meaning they can claim improved emissions.

I could have had one on the X6 (for a price) but with RFTs I find the underfloor storage much more useful.  Recovery will come and get us if needed.  Our new 220Dx Gran Tourer has RFTs as standard as well, and being a 7-seater, nowhere to put a spare.  The downside of course being getting replacement ‘*’ approved rubber at 10pm on a wet night in the middle of nowhere - or France.

For what it's worth...........

My X3 came to me with non-RFT (but * marked) tyres and no spare.  I've bought a set of winter wheels, and have laid one on the boot floor on top of an eBay-purchased tailored rubber mat.  I found an old, but working, bottle jack in my garage which now resides in the underfloor storage space with a jacking-point pad, a home-made chock, a breaker bar and a 17mm socket.

At some point soon I'm going to knock-up a plywood "mezzanine floor" to go above the spare wheel so that I still have a flat area for shopping/suitcases.
