Hello

I am in the market for a 2nd gen X5, budget up to approx. £18k. I am deliberating whether I buy a new model (2010 onwards with the updated I drive, gear box, angel eyes FCI) with a higher mileage, over a lower mileage pre 2010 model (with the old idrive navigation system, amber angel eyes, etc).

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Prioritise options and engine over pre-LCI and LCI. The only real differences are the lights, iDrive, and some minor external modifications, and some new wheels. The LCI isn't as drastic as it has been on other BMW's (see E63, E90).

It will be a much better car if you get the engine and the options you desire. The only difference in the gearboxes between the pre-LCI and post LCI is the number of gears and thus the MPG, which increases by at least 3mpg. They are both smooth units and cause no issues.

The car with the most options that you find and you want is the car you should get, even if it's a year older or a bit high on mileage. This approach meant that we could get the better twin turbo engine, a M-Sport instead of an SE, better interior and seats, more options etc.

Basically a 2010 onwards 40d Sport with a few nice options and you can’t go wrong.

In my opinion it really does need to be an LCi with 8 speeds and higher BHP engines.

I’m leaning towards the LCI model m sport, with a 4.0D engine. Slightly higher mileage yes but then I know I’ve got a cracking engine and updated I drive system etc.

I agree with Digidick.

The later cars even with higher mileage will retain more value and be in greater demand esp as it has the later 8 speed box, and the improved I drive system.

I’m on my 3rd X5 now after a few years break and it had to be the 40d this time. You’ll be pleased you did whilst owning it and when coming to sell it.

As a general rule (for any car, and nothing to do with LCI) I would say to always prioritise age over mileage.

Obviously there will be other considerations like condition, options, etc, but all things being equal I’d always take a newer, higher mileage car over an older, lower mileage one.

Thank you all kindly for your posts and help. Really helpful. This is the vehicle (pls click on link below) I am looking at (4.0D M sport 2011). Slightly higher mileage than what I was hoping for but then it is the LCI newer model with FSH and 1 owner from new.

Never been afraid of high milers.. Bought our last XC90 with 195k on it and put another 70k on it over 2 years without a hitch. Likewise with the 40d, I went for a 75k example as it brought the facelift cars into my budget.

My view is that these cars are designed to be driven and serviced, not parked up and not serviced.

I’d always prefer a higher mileage car with meticulous service record, MOT history and general condition over a lower mileage car but with long service gaps. As a used buy, we don’t know how a low mileage car has been driven: short and frequent journeys or long but occasional journeys.

This is particularly true for DPF fitted diesel cars.

As for pre- or post-LCI E70, I’d definitely push for post LCI one - new 8 speed gearbox on its own is a good enough reason to go for LCI E70. And that’s exactly what I did when I bought my 40D a few years ago.
