Loss of power

Help please. Whilst driving at low speeds earlier the car suddenly lost power the DDE light came on and then came to a stop. When trying to start there is no sign of the engine turning. Breakdown assistance suggests no compression. It’s a 2.0d N47 2008 94k Miles. Could the chain have gone?

Sorry to hear of your woes.
I would try turning the crank , but unfortunately accessing the crank is so difficult in modern cars, usually meaning removing under trays etc to be able to get a spanner / wrench onto the crank bolt. then if the valves/ cam can be seen moving through the filler cap, the chain is intact (probably )
That 2.0 litre engine has history of pulleys/chains breaking in certain years.

Also worth checking the oil for any sign of metallic debris just in case. Fingers crossed that it is electrical (hence not cranking). Well worth getting the fault log read out using Carly or similar.
As Horizon unfortunately says, there is an issue with the N47 timing chain in 2006-2009, particularly with the 177bhp variant. Modifications were introduced in 2010.
Goodwill may be available if a full BMW service history is in place.

Its confirmed chain issue. Possible slip rather than snap.
It does have FULL BMW history up to the last one, which was performed by the dealer I purchased it off in Sept 2017.
I have decided to sell it as spares or repairs, as I cant afford not to have a car off the road whilst its being repaired.
