X5 Aircon slow to come on!

Post by Richyroos » Tue May 29, 2018 12:10 pm

As we have had some hot weather recently (for a welcome change!), I have had the aircon turned on, but every time I switch it on, it is very slow to blow cold air. When it does, it is cold, so not a question of a regas I don't think, the only thing I can think of is that the little fan inside the climate control panel is bunged up, and not sensing the real air temp inside the car.

I thought that I would ask the question before taking it out, in case someone could point to a different cause. I took this apart on an E39, and the fan was quite grubby in that, but did still work, hence my query
If in doubt, and all else fails - read the instructions!!  :) :)

I've just had a similar problem where the control module (with the little fan in) failed and in hindsight my a/c was slow to react, replaced module and all was fine. Took the old one apart and that fan was well bunged up and some other bits as well, wonder now if I had cleaned it earlier would it still be working. My advice DO IT. Your not going to do any harm and my save having to buy a replacement.

First before taking everything apart... Get a vacuum cleaner and put the suction hose over the small grills on the ac control panel and see if that clears it. I do that every time I clean out the car.

Sleepyfolks link was interesting, as the fan in that is different to the E39 fan, which was the same type as computers use for cooling only smaller, still if mine is drum shaped like in the link, it will be that much easier to clean! I will give it a go later, and let you know if it helped!

Thanks to Themoog - but I do that myself already - a good tip though, mind you I doubt many owner realise that is how the cabin temp is measured!!
