Transfer box rebuild

Post by the shreksta » Mon Apr 30, 2018 7:02 pm

Hey guys, not logged on for ages but as I'm seriously considering another e53 x5 I thought it best I post my questions.

Are the transfer boxes from the 2004-2006 a new unit only if it fails or can they be rebuilt? Google not showing up alot.

Also same goes for front and rear diffs.

They are the only thing putting me off another e53 as I wouldn't like to think how much they are from bmw.

If any of the above are able to be rebuilt what sort of cost is involved.

Cheers guys

Transfer boxes can be rebuilt ( KKX5  does them for a living ) Diffs are usually swapped out for used ones, some are rare ratios, but someone on here replaced both diffs to overcome this, sourced from a breaker.
Face lift gearboxes have failed or have the Lurch, but many are ok

If ever my transfer box gives up, or my gearbox or my front diff packs up that will just give me an excuse to throw all those parts in the bin and convert it to RWD!!  ;)

Plus looking at the work you do V8ooosh if your going rear drive may as well chuck in a V12 and 6 speed manual and turn it into an X5 Lemans
4.6is X5 Estoril Blue (current)
4.4 X5 Sport Topaz Blue LPG (now gone squashed by a tree)
Subaru Outback 3.0 Rn Star Silver (current)
AMG 6.3 CLS Obsidian Black (sold)

If the engine ever went pop (which it better not do after all the work I've put into it) then I've already had LS3/7 plans running through my head.......then if/when I got bored I could turbo it! It's just sourcing an engine and suitable box at a decent price!

Making the X5 manual RWD would be relatively simple to be honest - plus you get to shed a load of weight and get rid of all the unreliable parts at the same time! Infact if you were to time it right and did it as a kind of 'preventative measure' before these things broke it probably wouldnt cost you anything to do as you could sell off the other parts to cover the cost!

The more I talk about it the more tempting it is...... :))
