4.8 V8 economy

Post by Koxos87 » Sat Apr 21, 2018 9:21 pm

Hi guys,

Planning a 3000 miles journey, mainly motorway. What sort of mpg can i expect with normal driving? Lets say cruise around 70-80-90mph?

Anyone got some experience with one of this beast?

Thanks

I tend to think in terms of “smiles per gallon” rather than mpg.

This car will never be for those seeking economy, I guess if you are lucky you may get 17mpg but then maybe I am too pessimistic. I am sure others who have this model will be along soon.

I remember Clarkson driving the X5 “that’s a gallon, and another, and another. The only way this car could upset environmentalists more would be for it to run on sliced dolphin” or words to that effect.

You’ll get more than 17. I get 18mpg as a long term average and that is almost entirely my rush-hour commute of about 15 miles with a mixture of flowing 70mph dual carriageways and stop-start traffic. For a mostly motorway run (with a bit of normal roads either end) I’d expect low 20’s.

Thanks guys. To my normal daily commute, its not a problem. I can use fuel from work, one tank in every two weeks... “result” lol

What I’m trying to work out, how much more fuel would it take when I’m going to go on holiday. Im planning to drive it to Europe and back.(3000 miles round trip)

Used an online calculator, and if i get around 20 thats not too bad... [emoji33][emoji23]

Really don’t know what to do... like the car too much [emoji85]

I would get an lpg system fitted, you will get 30-35 mpg or better, cost of conversion £ 2000-2.500 so you would soon recoup the costs.

Not certain what the BMW system is like as I have not bothered to test it on my X5. When doing brim to brim tests of MPG over several tanks of gas in other marques I have owned the dash indication has always seemed a little optimistic.

May have to give it a go over the next month.

My 4.4 disco 3 is lpg and well worth doing if you plan to keep for a while.

Just sold an '02 X5 4.4i Sport - that would do 22mpg+ on motorway. Best to decide on speed, either 60, 65 or 70mph and then use cruise control. Have done this a lot on trips to west country. If go above 70 then you'll strat eating into milage, at 60 to 70 I can get close to 500miles on tank, if add in rural/town then it drops to 420 to 450 but I have perfected a light foot. More than 20MPG!! Luxury! :)
I seem to be getting about 16MPG in my 3.0SD. But I am mainly doing 2-5 miles journeys at the moment.  :-[
