Very noisy blowers on x5 40d

Post by asoni » Thu Apr 12, 2018 2:48 pm

Noticed recently that blowers were making a noisy whining sound, but not that loud. Recently ive had bursts where the noise has been very loud, a motor kind of noise. Also had splurts where the blower has suddenly gone really fast for a split second then back to normal.

If I manually set blower speed to maximum it seems to get rid of the noise. turning aircon on or off doesn't make any difference.

I have a pulsating noise from mine and not traced the issue

Pulsates or continuous changes with temp range

If it’s similar, open the bonnet and it’s even more apparent

Had a similar thing on my old e46. Have a search for Final Stage Resistor (FSR)

I've had FSR issues in the past on E46's and am familiar with the symptoms which (as far as I know) were things like blower randomly blowing fast/slow or hot/cold by itself.

I've never had issues with the blowers making a loud motor/screeching type of noise when the FSR was faulty so I doubt it's that but will certainly look into it just in case.

You are probably right, but I have heard of a quite different symptoms from faulty FSRs on the same model.
