Front offside alloy wheel hot after a long drive

Post by celica » Tue Apr 03, 2018 9:12 pm

Cornwall to bristol distance and noticed the front offside alloy wheel is hot

Is this because of binding brakes? What does it mean and how to adjust?

I thought I would check as when approaching home at lower speed could hear some creaking and was told by wheel alignment specialist to keep an eye on the wheels whether they get hot.

On that note I’m needing front brake pads for 3.0sd / 35d sport
Any recommendations for a bit more bite used as a daily

I have had it twice on my recent X3, sticking callipers both times.
2 new callipers sorted it, but had brake judder above 60 mph after as I think it warped the discs a little with the excessive heat.
The rear one was actually causing the flat tyre warning to be activated due to slowing that wheel slightly when hot
New pads will make it a lot worse, as the sticking can be the rusty exposed piston is pushed further back into the bore of the calliper, so beware

Maybe sticky calipers

Hoping it’s a cheap fix or else sounds like a new / refurb calliper and maybe new discs required :(

I had a sticking caliper on mine - started to notice occasional vibration through the steering wheel when braking from high speed (i.e. putting a lot of heat into the brakes relatively quickly) and this got worse until one day it became pretty much constant. At this point I also noticed the front offside wheel was hot after a longish drive.

I had a new (not refurbed) caliper, disks and pads and it came to £700 including labour at my local indy. I have the 4.8i - not sure if that has larger brakes than yours, which would affect the price.

I'd have taken a refurb if they'd been able to get one but their supplier didn't have any. I could have sourced one myself, but it would have meant being without a car for a few days and wouldn't have saved me a huge amount of money.

My indie charged me £170 to do the rear calliper on my X3, service Exchange Pagid
The front one was a little more if I remember correctly.
I could feel the front of the car shake slightly after when braking from 60+ mph afterwards, so possibly the discs were warped due to the heat.
I nearly melted my finger on the disc after a motorway run

Booked in with indie

I need to get new pads and sensor, probably Pagid as happy with them before for general daily use from eurocarparts

Hoping callipers can be cleaned and lubed up and discs not warpped
