Hi everybody,

I had some temperature issues with my X5 by turning on the AC.
So i took it to bmw and they overcharged....replaced thermostat housing and 2 pipes and the coolant tank..... and ignored the fan completely.(even though i told them that maybe that the fan is broken)
They want another £800 for replacing the fan After checking this myself and asking them again to confirm if the fan is broken.
I would appreciate if anyone could tell me where i could buy the fan from so do this myself.
i found some on ebay but i prefer someone recommended by the experts.
please help me guys almost every garage here just wants money and not doing anything.
thanks for your help

The Aux pusher fan is for the AC only, nothing else.
Mine has been inoperable since I had the car...

If you have over-heating issues, then most likely a thermostat, or blocked rad core or head gasket issues if you're losing water.

If running the AC your engine goes Over-Cool, the the thermostat is jammed open.

**More information of temperature & if too hot or too cool please ?

The temperature gauge goes up by turning on the AC
and only if the car is in place(not moving)or hot on a hot day.

They have replaced horses and pipes and the thermostat and the coolant tank and checked for any leaks.
there are no leaks

Did the dealer read the fault codes. If not why not, can you get them read, is your cabin heater working ok. Is your viscous fan working properly. If you turn off the a/c and leave it idling does it still overheat. Were you loosing coolant which prompted the dealer to change those pipes and header tank. It's unlikely those pipes or header tank were blocked/restricted.

They did not tell me anything about any codes,
and there is no fault on the boardcomputer.
The heaters work perfectly.
The viscous fan is ok from my point it spinns  ::) and nothing is wrong with it,engeen is really quite.
If the AC is OFF when the car is in place nothing happens all good.
but if the AC is ON and the car is in place the it goes up but not immediately.
They said there is a crack in the header tank and something not enough pressure and loosing through pipes /thermostat.
that is all i know
thanks

Access the hidden menu and you will be able to see the true temp reading
The temperature gauges on cars are vey crude, even on my new VW caddy van the temp gauge always sits in the middle, even though the reading on the digital oil  temperature display can range from 70 to 105.
As mentioned the aux fan isn't part of the engine cooling system, but saying that it may be called for in an over temperature situation as a backup. Mine on the 8 series was seized and never caused any problems engine temp wise.

i am 100% sure that the temperature was to high cause the bond was boiling and little bit smelly so i turned on the Heater on max. to get all the hot air out.
i dont really want to turn on the AC and get high tem. again since they have replaced pipes.etc
what will happen if you turn on the aircon and the fan doesnt run?

They are linked together and AFAIK if the fan does it run then the climate control doesn’t operate.  Can you cycle the a/c down to 16°C (its minimum) and it gets properly cold?

You should hear a fairly loud ‘click’ when the ac compressor kicks in as it uses an electric clutch which free wheels when off.  If that isn’t happening then suspect either gas or compressor.  Fans do go but the electric fan is only for the ac.  The viscous fan will freewheel at cold, but does it run properly at engine speed once hot.  In theory you can stop it by hand at cold but it’ll take your fingers off at hot and will instantly match the engine rpm.

What’s the ac gas level like?  Low gas level = low pressure = no Aux fan.  These cars lose 15% per year, more if the ac isn’t used as the seals perish.

As Horizon says access the hidden menu and see what your temperature really is.

when i turn the AC on it gets louder (air blowing )
set it up to 16°C and it gets cold but it could be colder.
I did not hear any loud klick.

I have to get the gas level checked
I have to check the temperature when the gauge goes up(hiddenmenu)

how can i find out if the viscous fan runs properly on the hot engeen

-Compressor is working (saw it running and klicking finally)
-Recharged the AC gas level to 440 now.
old pressure was at 340 and  No leaks found.
-AC is properly cold now at 16°C
-when i turned on the AC the temp. went up to 105°C and then i turned it off (it would go higher)
after turning it off the temp. went back to 90°C.
-I checked the hidden menu and saw the temperature;
Idle 94°C
driving very slowly 92°C
at 60mph 87-90°C
at 80mph 93-96°C
Turned off the car went up to 95°C and then slowly down.
-I drove the car for 15min engine temp. was at 95°C and then did the"Newspaper fan clutch test"
and I could stop the viscous fan easily.
Do i have now 2 broken fans? :xmassad:

Now would be a good time to get a replacement viscous coupling of ecp as they have a 75% Easter discount? As for the A/C fan due to the price of a new one you could try a parts request of the dismantlers and see what they charge if your sure you haven't got a wiring problem and fuses are good on your current one.

Thank you all for all your help i really appreciate it
