Warning and then smoke...

Hi I had the Self Leveling suspension inactive warning on and off for the last week. Saturday went for a short drive to shops and back and pulled onto the drive, got out to find smoke coming from under the bonnet....
First noticed from os wheel arch but opened the lid to find in coming from down below the ns front light!
Had a good look but found nothing, so started it again - nothing. Took car down to local BMW stealer now.
Warranty will look at suspension issue but smoke worries me more!!
Any suggestions?
I noticed a little oil on a pipe low down on the left side. Also whats the narrow metal pipe that bends down with nothing on the end of it??
thanks
Paul

Has the webasto exhaust pipe come out of the connection in the side?

Can you take a picture of the area you mean (in daylight)? Might help us to help you pin it down.
Have you got air suspension all round, or just in back? Can you hear the compressor running in the boot? Might need someone to be listening closely, or the spare removing so you can get the dome lifted.

Had this happen to me a while back - is it 'clean' white smoke? But thick.
Mine was the exhaust pipe that goes to the wing from the Webasto heater, did it once, cr@pped myself but has never happened again.
Like pvr, think it could be your Webasto (assuming you have the diesel).

thanks - its with BMW now. But yes I think it was white smoke - stunk tho phew!
It has the auto self leveling. Was clicking in the back last week - sounded like a solenoid going nuts.

That's your's Webasto unit then - the stink is the oil burning. Unit could have gone nuts, if under warranty hopefully they'll replace it - nice expensive part. Push for it...

thought I'd drop an update for future use - the webasto looks ok. Bmw said it probably 'burped' ffs!
Anyway with regard to the self leveling suspension they said the fuse kept popping and they traced it back to the air pump. So they are currently speaking to my warranty company to a tune of £968 fitted ....
