30D super low fuel efficiency, why bruv?

Hello everyone I hope you feel good this evening. I have an F25 30D M sport, 85k miles. I know its not going to get the advertised 47mpg and was expecting more like 35mpg, but it's averaging 28mpg. What's his problem? Mechanically all seems fine so what's his game? Check me some insight people.

[/quote]Hi and welcome to the forum

I had a 3.0d E53 X5 and that did the same
47 MPG LOL

I average normally around 32mpg in my 2.0d drive. Can be up to 36 if I do more motorway only driving. Most of the time just 2 adults and a small child.

I'm the same. Not long had my 3 litre (13 plate with 56k on clock) and averaging 32 mpg which is a tad disappointing even on long runs. Don't drive like a dafty very often either.
Investigating a remap for improved fuel efficiency.

Chucked in a can of Archoil AR6400-D MAX but made no difference.

Absolutely love the car despite the crap economy.

Thanks everyone for your posts, I feel the pain has been shared if not the mpg increased!  I drive mostly sensibly but quite a few short hops and it is pretty hilly where I live - so maybe 28 isn't so bad (certainly better than the 19 my old Arthur daley Jag managed).

Is this an actual figure or from the computer?
I did over 300 miles yesterday in my 35d at an average of 60 mph and just over 40 mpg indicated. That’s running on Shell V power though, wouldn’t get that on ordinary fuel....

Its the reading from the computer... can it be trusted? I do a lot of 1-5 mile trips so wonder if that is a factor.

It certainly won’t help.  You will need to be very careful of the DPF if doing short journeys as the car needs to be fully warmed up and running at speed (40mph at least) for another 20 mins after that.

You need to do at least one longer, faster run every couple of weeks or so.  If the DPF doesn’t regen every 500 miles or so, it will clog with soot over a few months and they are VERY expensive to replace.

Removing them is no longer an option as the incoming MOT checks for any smoke under power (and without a DPF you get smoke!).

my mrs has a 35d m sport no matter how you drive  >:D it we always get between 27.9 and 30 mpg, remember thats alot of power used to push around a 2tonne vehicle with ease so its hardly going to be efficient  :)

my fuel economy dips to 31mpg if doing repeated short journeys, as itls a big brute to stop/start. As others have said, you really need to get her out on a 20 min open run down a fast dual carriageway or mottorway before the dpf gets clogged.
Mine sits around 35mpg according to the computer

I must be a lucky one then. I have had a 35D MSport for over two years and average (on the computer) 38+mpg. If I can remember to reset the computer I have averaged just over 40 on a long run using ecopro and cruise on motorways. I live in the mountains and occasionally have fun with the sport modes too.

I don't record mileage against diesel fills but I'm roughly getting the same fuel consumption (as in filling up against journeys) as I did in my Mk2 2.2D Honda CRV that I had for seven years (and the road tax for the X3 is also cheaper than for the CRV!!).

I love this car and I deffo know it's returning a fuel consumption in the high 30s because my other car is an E46 M3 and that's a thirsty mistress.

I love roasting people at the lights in sport mode... MPG low to mid 30's. Just got 58.9MPG on the 2.2 civic round the M25 I feel dirty for saying that

That sounds about right for a 30d. I'm averaging just over 30 about the doors, up to 40 on a decent motorway run.

Plenty of real-world figures here

When you click on the model year, you then need to select "L6 diesel" and then apply the filter.  Most of the users include the percentage of city driving in their figures.
