advice on worn out tyres

Post by mark hamster 28 » Fri Mar 09, 2018 10:58 pm

Just a quick one folks. I bought my X5 F15 about 6 months ago now and when picking up I was not happy with corroded wheels and front tyres.! After a big battle with Stratstones Derby and to cut a long story short, they replaced the alloys but not tyres as said they OK. Now I wasn't happy but just wanted to get on and enjoy my car. Anyway it went into Sytners Notts last Friday to have brake fluid change and pan roof looked at, I also asked them to see if all ok with car as still not sure about the way it drives at times (seem to fight with steering on some road, especially ones where lorries have made a grove in road) Anyway they sent me a video health check and after only 2050 miles, the front tyres are zero mil on outer edges, 2mm inner edges and 3 mm in center AND one tyre is perishing also.! Now this was an BMW Approved car and was about 28 months old when I bought it with 48000 miles.
Now is this this OK that I should be having to replace the tyres after only 2K when they told me they was ok ??
A manager at stratstones asked me to send him the video of which I did and current mileage. It was last Sat so he asked to give him a few days so he could talk to service department about it. Yesterday I e-mailed him for a reply and today I phoned up but he not there and they said they would get another manager to call me BUT guess what...NO CALL
I have spoke to BMW UK today and all there advice was is I really need to speak to Stratsones Derby and all they could do was call them and demand they get back in touch with me.
Any advice from people who have had simalar problems would be most gratfull.

Sorry it was not a quick one in end

It Sounds like they pulled a bit of a fast one, but I’m wondering if you’ll have much comeback with them given it was 6 months ago?  It is however worth the try.  What I do know is that you have to be a bit careful with the tyre depths on these so as to not screw up the xdrive.  Sounds like you need 4 tyres no matter who is paying  :(

I guess the dealer hasn't broken any rules as long as the tyres were above the legal minimum depth at the time of sale (1.5 mm )
As the car has 50k on the clock it has probably worn out 2 sets of tyres ( or maybe 3  ) so I suppose they could argue that tyres are a consumable, so not their problem as is brakepads etc.
Trouble is they are so expensive to change a full set of tyres that its a blow the wallet.
I would be angry too if I had to fork out nearly a grand on tyres after 2k miles too.
Hope they contribute towards them

thanks for reply's so far. Rear Tyres have 7mm so they will not have to replaced luckily and obviously would been even better 2000 miles ago. I did ask about this also but they told me as did sytner that they only have to be replaced as pair on same axle. I know on hear they keep saying you must do all 4, and I trust this forum and you guys a lot more but I'm gonna keep up the BMW warranty, so if anything does go bang, I will be covered. Just so surprised they can sell you a car and in 2K miles you got buy new tyres after being told they ok  :'( :'(
