Hi,
The cooling fan on my car is running from when the engine is started until the engine is turned off.
The car is a manual 2.0 Diesel (M47N2). It does this even when cold and with the air con off.
I thought it may be a problem with the fan switch in the radiator hose (a bit of general googling gave me this idea).
Now I'm beginning to think my car doesn't have a fan switch in the radiator hose, I can't find any mention of it in RealOEM, also I've had a look in the engine bay and I can't see one.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Mick

My fan was running all the time and my DSC 4x4 light , airbag light, flat tyre warning light were lit up like a Christmas tree.
Several faults from Steering angle sensor , Central air bag to rear right wheel sensor were all present.
Turned out to be a rear wheel sensor had been chewed up by the reluctor ring / driveshaft corroding and catching the wheel sensor.
My Indie says he's never had so many faults logged and bizarre that the fan was running all the time.
Once the wheel sensor/ reluctor ring was replaced, all the faults went away
Probably not helpful but be aware it could be a lot deeper than you think.
The fan is tied into many systems DSC being one of them.
Get your codes read , this may be a help to diognosing the problem

Thanks for the reply,
I've got a code reader on order, I'll get that plugged in and read the codes as soon as it turns up.
These cars do seem overly complicated sometimes )
I'll keep the thread updated with any solution I find to help anyone else that may have a similar problem.

Re: 2005 E83 X3 cooling fan on all the time the engine is running
I've had a check for any fault codes and found 15, I cleared them and went for a drive and ran the check again.
This time I got 10 error codes, four of them are Heating/AC related and are as follows:
AUC sensor 00001E
Short circuit to earth - pressure sensor 00001F
Plausibility solar sensor - K-LIN 3 RLS 000021
AUC heating 000020
Could any of these errors be linked to my problem?
Mick

Re: 2005 E83 X3 cooling fan on all the time the engine is running
The problem has now changed, the fan now doesn't come on at all, but will spin if I turn on the A/C.
So the fan is still getting power, but it doesn't seem to kick in to cool the engine down. I read somewhere that the fan should spin on start for a short time as a system check. Is this correct?
Mine doesn't do this.
Does anybody know at what temperature the fan should kick to cool the engine?
Mick
