2003 (53 plate) e53 showing AUX nothing plugged in

Hi,
I have a 2003 (53 plate) x5 3.0d.
I have a problem where by Aux is selectable on by flicking through modes. Now the problem is, there isn’t a cable plugged into the loom behind the head unit (widescreen satnav model).
I bought an aux cable and fitted it, however no sound comes out the speakers. I have pressed the 6 button to turn aux volume right up, and on turning the volume to full I can get a low static noice, but that is it. I have tried IPhone, iPod, iPad, Sony z3, Moto G4. None of them make any noise.
Now I’m sure there must be a fault in the car somewhere as without the aux cable connected it should not be able to select aux as it will not be reading any resistance (if what I’ve read is right anyway).
I do have rear tv’s (look to be horrible cheap Chinese ones) so it could be that someone has had a play with the wiring, however the rear aux plugs for the TVs don’t act as an aux (just in case they had spliced the actual aux wiring into them).
So really I am at a bit of a loss here. I am competent with wiring and mechanical work etc but I was hoping someone else would have had this problem and can give me pointers rather than me having to go fault finding.. I have enough project cars and motorbikes as it is!
