Hi, new to the forum,
I've just purchased an X5 3.0D SE 2012 and notice a juddering (feels like the font) on the wheels when pulling away/turning, only at low speeds. no impact when the car reaches 15-20 mph.

Have read a couple of posts about drive shaft recalls .......... thought it may be something like that?

Garage suggested its wheel alignment and have offered to check this. Can anyone advise if they have had this?

Condor X5 had this problem and it turned out to be the transfer box, luckily her car was AUC so was replaced under warranty.

The car came with an AA 6month warranty, will need to check if this is covered.......

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Others have suggested the trye type and remaining tread depth could be the problem......?

Highly likely to be the transfer box, and frequently caused by either wide tread depth variation front/rear or use of non ‘*’ marked tyre sets which don’t have matched diameters.  BMW AWD Systems are overly sensitive to tyre types, more so on staggered wheelsets, meaning a wrong choice can and does break things.  ‘*’ marked tyres are specially made for BMW vehicles and are matched.

I would be checking the tyres and if wrong, getting the supplying dealer to pay to repair the car or take it back and refund you the cost of the car.  If it has been doing it since you bought it then it isn’t fit for sale.

The AA warranty did have a limit on the per claim value and you may be about to exceed it - check the small print.

Don’t let the garage fob you off with wheel alignment and the like, these symptoms are exactly what the failing transfer box does.  BMW swopped my wheels /tyres with another set from an E70 on the floor before they would replace the transfer box but its just as easy for a garage to disconnect the transfer box and if the problem resolves, it is clearly the issue.  Its a very expensive replacement (££££££) so they are likely to try to wheedle out of it if they can fob you off!  Not sure about the aftermarket warranties but AUC warranty covered everything in my case  - all silky smooth slow speed turns now.  These cars are ridiculously sensitve to incorrect tyres or mismatched ones, they will kill an e70 transfer box . 

E70 lci are not so sensitive for bad tyres. Judder/vibration at low speed=transfer box. Remove fuse 92 (30A), and test drive it.

What did they change to make them more tolerant?

A bit vague to say the least! I'd be curious to know what design improvements were made on the LCI / a certain year to make the drivetrain more tolerant to rolling radius differences etc. Not sure it matches up with other members experiences of having "newer" vehicles that still fail, like 2012's etc.

I didn't say they improve transfer boxes. The system is all new. No point going into details. Type in google: Atc700 vs Atc450. Unfortunately, while they succeed on tyres tolerance and system response, they fail on clutch design hence judder/vibration. Its not only x5's. x3, x6, x1, 1,3,5,7 series share same problems.
