Unfortunately the most likely issue will be either the torque converter or gearbox itself unless your trans fluid level is too low to maintain operating pressure.  It will go into gear but without enough pressure it won’t move.

You’ll need to get underneath to check the level (car needs to be kept level too) and also check the colour and ‘smell’ of the oil.  If dark brown and burnt smelling then the couch and brake packs are slipping and the friction linings will need replacing.

Should it be a box issue then you are looking at £1,500 upwards for a rebuilt swap out.

The E53 is known for transmission failures (I had one myself with no warnings until far too late).  Mine made nasty clanking noises before losing all drive.

I went back out to the car again tonight if I do a gearbox reset by holding down the acc pedal for 30secs then start the car it will let it drive until I move it to N or R then it won't do anything again

That just resets the throttle adaption, it has no effect on the box itself.  Will it move in ‘Manual’?  Sometimes they do which might at least get you to a specialist (though trailer recovery would be safer and cause no more damage if there is any) who can read the fault logs to see what is recorded.
