I am looking for a bit of advice can get a 2012 E70 40d , 57000 miles full service history from a local dealer £22995 or a 2013 f15 se , 67000 miles , full history from a dealer 150 miles away for £22900 which one would you choose ? And why ?
I like the E70 but the F15 is newer so will hopefully be cheaper to run !

Hi

I would say the newer F15 car is likely to retain more value, but I think you said it was an SE not sure how specked of if like the older E70 SE which had unpainted arches which didn't look too great when compared to the painted MSport.

Also as you say the road tax is probably cheaper on the F15, but you need to drive both. The 40d in my view is a better engine but Jason can always map the 3.0d for you :)

Hi Graeme
        thanks !
I like the look of both but one has been sitting around for months in the dealers and I cant understand why , although it has a brown interior on a black car and is pretty poverty spec it started at 25k and is now £22900 , doesnt have the M sport arches , 18" wheels , standard seats .
The other car has M sport package is white with a black interior , 20" wheels and is mint body wise after spending a few weeks making it perfect in the body shop .
Last option is to wait and get a lower mileage car after I save a few more grand as 26-27k gets a 2014 car with 25-35 thousand miles on the clock .

F15, old models depreciate like crazy once newer models become within affordable range. A lot of X5's are on personal plates which hides the age,  but model changes cant hide this.
Also F15 owners have quoted that it's a massive Improvement on the E70

We always seem to be on the wrong end of the deal !
I am not in a rush until another warning light comes up .
M sport is the preferred option but newer shape is tempting .

Hi, I've owned both now and been running the F15 since Oct 2017. Both were 3.0D M Sport but the F15 is defiantly a lot quicker yet better on fuel and road tax
I had a choice of a 2014 with less miles or the one I bought which is 2015 with a few more miles and better speck. I thought that in 3 years or so when its time to sell, the slightly newer one should be worth more as we only do about 6-8k a year so it will bring the miles into line with average. Saying that I've never drove a 4.0D but I'm more than happy with power that's on tap. Still slightly bumpy on the F15 but a lot better than the E70 was but gonna ditch the run flats when they need changing me finks

I would have the 40d over a f15 se (I am biased) they are a brilliant car to drive, look the dogs and still hold on to there value  ;)

Contrary to my post above, you have to stand back and look at the models, price (& spec which ultimately make a car)

The E70, is accomplished, the price is near enough ceiling having drastically depreciated recently, it’s realistically & most likely a better car with enhanced spec

The F15, would be the introduction model, basement price, most likely lesser spec,

For long term ownership, the f15 will merit a better return on resale & offer current model ownership though the sparse spec list would annoy me!
I’d also suggest the worsening dieselgate misery that should offer beneficial negotiations if done correctly!
I looked at the F16 over Christmas & couldn’t warrant the price to change (dismal trade in) looking at the two side by side I found little detriment in having the older car, on the basis, I think, my car is a good few notches above the average, my car was a well presented AUC car, meaning I paid top dollar and lose hugely should I sell
I think 4.0d is the sweet spot in the X5, perhaps look at both models with this engine!

Id move your thoughts to accepting a very well specced E70 or a sparse F15, at the suggested price point!
