Hi guys just got chance to buy a genuine BMW  towbar the detachable type but the only snag is there are no keys is it possible to get a key or lock set for it? I was able to do this on my last d3 but a quick glance on eBay and google doesn't show any results if I can't get key it's no such a good deal as the towbar would not be detachable? If any body could point me in the right direction that would be great otherwise will give dealers a bell on Monday cheers

Keys are available

You’d need the manufacturer of said towbar, ideally the previous owner took a note of the key number, normally written on the manual, though doubtful
The towbar should have a seriel number on it, you could try phoning e mailing the manufacturer

May prove difficult to get the key, trial and error could be troublesome and expensive!

Genuine will be made by Westphalia.  BMW should be able to give you the key number from the original VIN but probably won’t unless you have that car (to prevent theft etc).  I assume the current seller doesn’t have the car either?

PF Jones sell this bar for aftermarket fitting so you could give them a shout - or get the seller to as they have the bar etc.  They should also be able to advise on changing the lock set too  :)

A couple of things to note from when I got an E70 with a towbar but no key:

1. There should be a code stamped next to the keyhole lock
2. I wrote directly to Westfalia (in Germany, not the UK lot) with the code - they sent me a key back for about 5 euros, I think
3. You will need all the relevant electrical control boxes that are hooked into the car - mine has quite a rats nest of these

Finally, I've actually never dismounted the towbar since having the key - its too much hassle and a red tow cap deters others from getting too close...
