2018 X5
2018 X5
Next year, I am planning to swap the X5 40d for something else. I have had a brief look at the current X5M as the discounts are great, i.e. 20k on a new one which makes the price acceptable to some extend.
As there is a new model coming out next year, I would not want to buy the current model, but the only concern is that on a new model you would not get the same level of discount.
My alternative is the 2018 Cayenne S which also looks like it is going to be an interesting car. Anyway, some play thoughts for now until I try both.
Anyone ever driven an X5M by the way?

Re: 2018 X5
I got the impression that it was a brand new model based on the 5 series platform:

Re: 2018 X5
Not driven an X5M, but the X6M is very nice if a bit thirsty.. I thought the 'M' versions of new models lagged behind by a year or so?

Re: 2018 X5
Hi
I have the older model but basically the same engine, as the later ones although they now have 8 Speed boxes which probably makes it a lot smoother.
The engine is effortless and have only used M mode a couple of time and once on the Test drive, I hardly use Sport as it has a lot of power, and about the same torque as a diesel model. Consumption no worse than the old 4.4 normally aspirated version and if anything slightly better at 21-23. It has comfort seats and are nice to have and make a long journey easy.
I have the standard 20" and Bridgestone Runflats, which are firm ride a bit like the 22" without runflats, so if you like the firm ride or a sporting feel then it would be okay, so have a test drive which is what sold it to me, but then again I like a fiat abarth 595 firm suspension.
So if you want to be wafted like my brother in law about go for another model, he sticks with the Range Rover, which is nice but a bit unconnected for me.
Hope that helps
Graeme

Re: 2018 X5
Definitely a new model - 4th Generation. Could be happening so soon because the X3 is now in its G01 form and the X7 is also on the way so the X5 needs ‘repositioning’ to be competitive. BMW are still selling more than 126,000 X5 models a year which has to be making serious money for them.
Could also be that the demon Diesel engine witch hunt means much cleaner and more efficient engines are needed in order to maintain market share, and in the EU diesel still rules and will do for another generation because there is no sensible alternative for now.
I can see the UK Government starting to go for larger petrol engine owners too though. Even with low mileage the VED rates could be ouch!

Re: 2018 X5
There is that point. I already have the other cars for which I am already paying the VED, and as I only do 6k miles a year it might be an expensive hobby.
Just can't see myself getting another diesel though, and a small petrol engine does not sound that much fun after the 40d.

Re: 2018 X5
If only doing low miles it makes no sense either. Diesels are for mile munching. A colleague has gone from a diesel to a much smaller petrol engine that has to be worked hard to get any ‘go’ out of it and the economy is nowhere near what was expected.
I’d like another 3.0d but a 2.0d is where we are going to end up as the petrol option is still too costly in fuel for 15,000 a year.

Re: 2018 X5
Been given a X5M for a day on Thursday to have a play with, so will update during / after that run what it is like.
The Cayenne will be later this month I guess, or whenever they have them available to have a run in.
