Hi all
Need some advice Please if anyone can help ive noticed over the last few weeks that im getting a large puff of white smoke coming from the exhaust. this lasts for a couple of seconds and then goes. It isnt effecting the performance and has only happened about 4 times so far, once on morning start up and the rest whilst moving at about 30. I have had the x for about 7 months and it has only got 38k on the clock. i have also taken it to my local indy and they said they could find a problem.

check the oil - does it look right?
Might just be the weather making the fumes a little more obvious - like breath on a cold day.
Might also be water though - hence checking the oil - could be gasket problem but you would find oil in water (coolant slick) or water in engine oil - white/creamy around the oil filler cap....
Do you use the car on runs? Could have water collecting in the exhaust too I suppose?
good luck hope its nowt

Thank you for you replies i hope its going to be nothing.
its alot more smoke than the cold weather fumes . ive had an oil change a couple of days ago and said it was ok.
it has happened form cold and when the engine has warmed up
Bonerp i will have to take it out for decent run as most of my journeys are short.
Thanks again
Lou

I had this problem on my e46 330, had the milky crud in the filler cap too. So had a panic thinking it was a head gasket but turns out because I was only doing short journeys condensation was building up in the rocker cover and exhaust. Got told to take it for a long drive and check the oil cap again, did that and it all cleared up. After that I used to take it for a long run atleast twice a week to make sure it didnt happen again.

If you do find any 'mayonnaise' on the oil cap you really ought to do an oil and filter change, and then get it nice and hot with a decent run. Short runs also kill batteries as they never properly charge up.
