New to x5 ready to torch it
Hi, I've wanted an x5 for years and could never afford one til recently and its not living up to my dream. She runs rough as a bag of spanners almost as if there's no oil (she's just had an oil change and filter and not losing any) just looking for.suggestions on what it could be really it's an 02 diesel 80,000 miles

It might be worth getting it to someone who can read any error codes being stored (they don’t all cause a warning light) to see if anything shows.
It would help if you could give more details as to what you are experiencing so those with that Gen on X5 can give you pointers.

Welcome,
As indicated easiest way to know what is wrong is to take it to someone wirh diagnostic kit & capable of diagnosing any issues you have.
Otherwise it's a case of trial and error. Poor running could be down to any one of a number of issues.....glow plugs, plug control unit, leak(s), filters, turbo, sensor(s), loose connection , engine internals etc.
Did you knowingly choose to source the car in this condition as a repair project or unknowingly buy it with issues discovered later ?
Was the car sourced privately or from a motor trader as a retail sale ?
Just curious as how you came to be in a regrettable position so soon after sourcing.something you have wanted for years.
Easy to part with hundreds or far more to sort a car in need.

Thanks for.the reply, I've got inpa and the only error showing is glow plugs so I've got some new ones and a relay to fit this weekend, could that really cause it to run horrifically rough?
I bought it knowing it had a misfire which I fixed with a new injector in cylinder 5 I've also put a new maf on all filters and oil, the fuel filter made a big difference.
Everytime I do something it makes it better for a short while but there's an underlying problem also think I might have a boost leak as there's quite a whoosh when rev it

Sounds like a vac leak to me, have you checked all sensors are plugged in, no sure on a 2002 but on a 2004 there's a sensor at the rear of the intake manifold if that is not seated properly you will get a whoosing noise...check around all the possible intake pipes, if you spray some carb cleaner around where pipes connect and the engine changes tone...there's your leak....

I know you put a new fuel filter on it and that helped. It worth working through the error codes.
However, has the car been sitting a long time and is the fuel really old as that could also cause probs as diesel thicker than petrol and could have deteriorated and so could need changing or cleaning out or diluting with newer diesel.
The reason as my neighbour recently bought petrol car that had sat for two years and once it had new fuel in it it ran a lot better.

Again thanks for taking the time to reply Marti this would make sense as I've felt something not right after putting the inlet manifold back on, I'll try a quick a quick spray of contact cleaner on it aswell see if it makes a difference gonna go out shortly and replace the plugs and relay and see if there's an improvement

So changed the relay now no codes showing and not made a blind bit of difference, unplugged sensor on back of manifold and sprayed with comtact cleaner no differnce. When its stationary idling or reving it sounds fine but when you actually move it's noisy almost as if theres no oil in it, any more suggestions or should I just give up and find a decent Indy?
