What are the symtoms of worn rear subframe bushes?

Hi folks, moving onto my next problem. I was searching rear sub-frame bushes on the forum, plenty of references. But what are the symptoms?
When I pull away from low speed there is a squeaking/creaking sound from the back end. There is also a dull thud with lateral movement under gentle acceleration/braking. Sounds/feels like something is moving in the rear trunk. Is this the bushes or is it the rear control arms that also seems to be a perennial offender?
