F15 20 inch alloy: will a 255 50 20 winter tyre fit?

Hi all

I have a f15 16 plate with 20 alloys and the tyres are massive as you all know.

I am soon replacing the x5 and the next car will wear a 255 50 20 tyre as standard - I am off to the alps this winter before the new car arrives therefore will need some winter shoes for the car. It would make more sense for me to buy the exact set that my future car will use for any future use.

My question is, will the 255 50 20 tyres fit on the 20 msport rims my car has? I assume the answer is yes but wanted to double check

Thanks

Hi are you sure about the tyre size ?
As the X5 usually run 275/40/20 front and 315/35/20 rears !
Make sure you have a square set up on the next set of wheels as winter wheels are normally 275/40/20 all round although most go for 18" 255/55/18 x 4 or 19" 255/50/19 x 4 .

Thanks that is the standard setup on the Velar

Do you think these tyres fit the x5 rims noting the tyres go up to 315 on rears?

Hi I wouldn't think so the rule of thumb is normaly 10 mm so 275/40/20 will be too wide for the rims , 315/35/20 will be dangerous! Why not sell the winters you have and buy some proper winter wheels and tyres for the Velar ?
Offset will also be effected by the overhang on the tyres .

Basically I don't have the winter tyres yet.

I will have to buy them for the hols but in December but will then take delivery of the Velar in Jan. I would like to buy some tyres that I can use in both the X5 and subsequently the Velar noting I went for 20s as well.

The idea being that I will use the tyres once in the x5 and then keep it on the garage for when I need it on the Velar.

My confusion is whether the 20" rim from the x5 is wider than normal to take the standard tyres (which go up to 315), because I have checked and the Velar uses 255 on their  standard wheels

If the X5 standard rims can take the 255 50 20 then it is perfect because I can buy the set of tyres, replace my all weather tyres with the winters for the trip (ir the normal x5 tyres) and then once back, replace tge tyres again and keep the set with standard Velar measurements on the garage for a future need. Does it make sense?

According to the Velar website the wheels are 8.5j x 20 et45 x 4 so none staggered and 8.5" wide .
oponeo.co.uk give you a guide for tyre to wheel fitment which states for a 255/50/20 tyre that the minimum is 7.5" - 9" maximum , as the X5 wheels are 10j x 20 et40 front and 11j x 20 et37 neither are compatible  with the tyres so it is a no !
Best option is to but some second hand X5 winter wheels for now , sell them when you get the new car & buy a second set for the Velar ( it  maybe a good time to get a good discount on them while purchasing the car )
As for the X5 wheels it would be cheaper going down the 19" or 18" route rather than the 20" as they are usually none staggered and are half the price of 20" which you may have difficulty selling afterwards .
I have a set for the E70 / which are supposed to fit the F15 same offset & wheel bolt pattern .

THanks for the thorough explanation, would any tyre size/profile fit both cars if I change the measurement specs?

To be honest the problem is the wheel width , that won't change which ever tyres you went for .
The other problem is the pcd are different , the only thing you might be able to do is buy some X5 19" 255/50/19 or 255/55/18 then some aftermarket wheels that fit the Velar and swop the tyres .
Best plan would be buy used X5 winter wheels , sell after use , then buy some velar winters . You may loose a couple of hundred on the X5 wheels but you will be safe rather than compromise your 2016 X5 and the new car to save a few hundred .
Unfortunately X6 wheels won't fit the F15 , or E53 winters so just buy the right ones , you may need to buy rdci valves for the X5 rims .
  Where are you based ?
