Jolting under load

Hi all after some help/advice i have a 2004 3.0 petrol with 6 speed manual gearbox. And when driving in any gear the car is jolting almost like sling shotting the car forward between 1500/2500 rpm it's not really aggressive just very noticeable. Then if your driving along at around 30mph and put it in to neutral to free roll the car you can hear a loud noice not a grinding noise. And the ones you get to around 10/5 mph the noise just stops and it free rolls nice and smooth. Can anyone shed any light on this problem TIA

First :hi:

Second - and easiest check - is what wheels do you have (18/19/20") and what tyres are fitted plus their tread depth?

BMW X-drive equipped vehicles are very intolerant of either wide tread depth variance or certain tyre combinations.  If it isn't happy then the transmission will wind up and it could be this relapeasing is what you are feeling.

Is it in any gear at those rpm, or at a certain speed only?  There are very few manual E53s around which makes offering diagnosis more of a challenge.

Any warning lights?  And recent work done?  Always done it (have you had it long) or just started?

Hi thanks for reply had it a few days it only has 17 wheels all same tyres size etc and yes does it in all gears if you don't got over 1500 rpm it doesn't do it I'm just not sure on we're to start Is there some simple easy things I can try before taking to garage, I'm hoping to get all oils changed next weekend gear box transfer and diffs and just ordered a new trans drive gear kit as there cheap enough, it's done 96k if that's of any use cheers

Tyres not so key on the 17" as they are all the same size :-)

Clutch, Dual-mass flywheel, fuel system, injectors?  Will be worth getting an error code readout done as that might help narrow it down.

If it is doing it at the same rpm in any gear then to me it sounds like engine/clutch and related ancillaries area rather than gearbox and further back.

Let's see what inputs others can suggest  :)
