Bought my 04 X5 yesterday, my angel eyes are really dim in comparison to my old e39, would the led kit improve things or have i got a bigger problem somewhere? ?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Are they a yellowish light ( halogen ) or a whitish light ( LED ) the E53 and early pre LCI E70's aren't Thayer bright on the LED front, I fitted LED front marker bulbs to my E53 and they were a whiter light but not very visible in daylight.
Members on here have spent loads on so called " powerful " front marker bulbs only to be disappointed.
The LED' s can be bought for a reasonable amount, and will give you a whiter light, but they will never be as bright as on later BMW's as the E53 uses a light tube as the halo ring which comes of the side of the bulb.

they're not great at the best of times to be honest. Can you post a daylight pic?

I have exactly the same problem, my LED angle eyes are barely visible during the day but are perfect and bright at night. I fitted these headlights because they  had LED indicators which are bright day or night? I have in the past fitted CCFL (£26) to another X and they are perfect day and night but requires the front lens removed (200c) in the oven for 20 mins to soften the glue enough to remove cover. Wife has to be out shopping to get away with that one. I'll probably do the ones I have now at some time. Haven't seen anything better than the CCFL they are right up there with the nice bright ones fitted by BMW.

Not sure about the E53 or pre LCi model E70
However
On the Lci E70 you can adjust the brightest of the angel eyes with the Carly adaptor.....

I think Sept (09) 2002 is the cut off date for splitting the headlights with heat (Cos they fitted heatproof glue after then).
Did mine ,it is a 2002 July. fitted ccfl halo rings in 2007, have now changed to led halo rings this year , managed to get a new, pattern, left hand lens , cost £45 from China.
