Can anyone shed any light on why there are seemingly 2 different types of dashboards in the X5, same model and year.  I thought it may have been to do with one having HUD, but I've seen conflicting images.

It's called the extended LCD Display I think, it's an optional cost option, hope this helps with your search.
I'm sure the F15 owners will be able to give lots more info

I hate to tell you this....

As well as the standard and extended LCD there is of course the multi-function display which, in my opinion, is a shocker.

Thanks for the responses. I've never seen the options for an extended display before. 

I don't mind the full digital cockpit version but don't know how this looks and works in the real world and whether the display is strong enough in sun light etc or too annoying in the dark.

Any ideas on what the extended dash does?  Is it simply a slight variation with no additional features?

Agreed.

I have a 640d loaner today with the electric dash - confirms to me all over again that I don't like it.

At the risk of confusing things further, the Sports display in my M50d looks different from the photo that MarkG50 posted!

thats because its not sport mode, its comfort at night when the dash illuminates, sport mode has a digital speedo in the left hand dial

My Sports dash, just to add to the set.

The main thing I like about the electronic dash is the extra pictures it shows of junctions etc for the sat nav - it provides more information than the main nav screen, and I find it less distracing than looking towards the screen in the centre of the car.
I'm personally not keen on the digital speed display in sport mode though. Plus it makes it a bit too obvious to MrsP that I've changed to that mode!
