Have a 2012 X5 with 20 inch alloys and non sports suspension, the outside of both front tyres is starting to show signs of very noticeable wear , what would cause this and what should the correct inflation be ?

Tracking errors are a frequent cause, assuming your Suspension bushes are all OK.

The default settings from the factory are not as good as they could be and owners often find that getting a 4-wheel alignment done improves this particular problem.  Potholes can also throw the alignment out too.....and UK roads are not exactly well maintained  >:(

Of course you could also be having too much fun going around roundabouts...... O:-) O:-) O:-)

Its usually caused by too much toe in .
Also check the VERY inside edges of the rear tyres. They are prone to wear, caused by too much -ve camber... Its a typical X5 fault.....
Oh and DONT take it to you BMW main dealer, they will most likely say its within tolerances.
BMW tolerances are too wide.
Take the car to a garage that has a "Hunter" machine. And ask them to set the car to your own specs. I set mine to ,, rears -1deg camber
                Front toe in total 0.10,, i think.

If it was underinflation then your front tyres would be likely to wear more at both the outside and the inside.

I had your problem on my first set of tyres on my E70. When I replaced all 4 the issue was solved - likely by being fitted correctly!

As above - I had exactly that problem - fronts wearing on the outside and rears on the inside.  A tyre specialist with the right measuring machine (I think mine was done on a CORGHI) set the front and rear toe in to the minimum limits and also checked front to rear alignment which is important to stop the car crabbing down the road!

Since then wear has been even over 3 sets of tyres.

One other thing  my usual trip to work involved three right turns at unrestricted roundabouts twice daily but I retired 3 years ago and that's saved wear on the nearside front (UK)!!!

That seems high unless you are carrying a load.  What does the plate on the B post of the driver's door give for your car.  Mine says 2.1 bar (30.5psi) for a normal load (5 passengers and luggage).  Over inflation makes the ride jarring and can cause too much wear on the central part of the tread. Can I suggest much better to get the tracking checked and set by a specialist and use the recommended pressures!
