MoT question

Hoping someone may know the answer to this as I have had two conflicting answers from two MoT stations.
My mot expires mid September and Im getting it tested, early, this week. I am aware that if it passes I will effectively have a thirteen month mot cetrificste.
But what is the situation if it fails? One tester said it would show up on the system and that it could not be driven. The other tester said that it was more complex - his take on it was that the original expiry date still stands, but .....it is not illegal to drive a car which has failed an mot, but it is illegal to drive, or knowingly drive, a car that is not roadworthy, and an mot failure for any reason would deem it be unroadworthy.
So driving it, if it were to fail, would be at my risk, but my question is, does the original expiry date still stand or not?
