Hi...so I recently bought my X5 which is 2008 3.0SD. It has 130,000 on clock and I can’t fault the drive. The previous owner was from Poland and informed me that nearly all the work that he had done to the car was done in Poland to save costs and there is some documentation that proves this...there is even a service stamp from Poland!

He has told me that last service he did was carried out in July 2016 and the additional work included  discs and pads all round, when buying the car I inspected these and there is plenty of life left in them.

I have noticed that the service inspection message has appeared on the car. I was planning on doing a service regardless of the inspection message consisting of;
ENGINE OIL
OIL FILTER
AIR FILTER
FUEL FILTER
POLLEN FILTER

I have a couple of questions for the community;


1. Am I missing anything from my basic service? Best place to get parts? ECF? Or is there an eBay dealer shop (I ask because I know for Mercedes that Newcastle dealer has an eBay shop with decent prices)

2. What does the inspection message actually mean? Had a quick look online and it would seem it just means a BMW technician has a look and advises what needs to be done?

3. I have a local trusted and knowledgeable mechanic who I have used over the years and I was planning to get him to do the service. In fact, he will be doing majority of all the work on the car.  Given the car is on 130k and I plan to keep it for some time (3 years) is there any worth to go independent specialist or dealer? 

Have a look at the CCV while doing the air filter.

The Service Inspection could also be telling you either the MOT is due (mine warns me every 12-months) or the brake fluid needs replacing.  A BMW Dealer will put your key in a reader and that will tell them what servicing is due.  No idea if a decent BMW Indy can do the same.

ECP are fine for most parts, especially those for a service.  Oil needs to comply with BMW LL04.  I use Castrol Edge FST 5W30.

I've read somewhere that Castrol Edge FST 5W40 is used in higher milage cars. Would I be okay to use 5W40 given the car has just clocked 130k?

130K isn't high mileage

How about Opie oils as a supplier?

'High' mileage on a diesel unit is 150,000 (or more), and even then it may only just be coming on song.

managed to get the oil from Costco as they were running a promo 20% off. worked out to 26 quid for 4lt.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Have you looked in the service schedule screen in the IDrive ?
Yours being a 2008 will have The CCC IDrive. Press the IDrive controller down to access the options menu the scroll to vehicle/ tyres then info I think service should appear. ( I'm doing this from memory, so if your struggling Youtube will show you how )
In the service menu it will tell you what's due, if the symbol on the dash is a car on a ramp, this is the mot due date I think
