VR and SMS

Post by nujon » Thu Mar 03, 2011 10:59 pm

Voice recognition and SMS display descriptions in my OBD manual are both marked with an asterisk - guess this means they were factory options noting that my vehicle has neither capability - read somewhere that the necessary hardware is likely to be already in place for a 2006 build - but that code-enabling would entail paying a Stealer many £100s - can anyone comment please?

Hi

When I purchase my e53 2004 it had SMS messages from the previous owner. Some very saucy as well!! Anyway my phone connected but didn't port messages. Apparently there are only a few compatible with the car that can so this with mist being motorola. If you do a search you will find the phones compatible. It doesn't like new technology so most of the new ones wont port SMS only phonebooks.

Ref the VR I enabled mine with a Resler interface and Nav Coder. I have successfully coded two others but have failed on 3. Some have don't have the correct module and it was hit and miss for the late '05's and '06's to code. There was a theory that if you had BMW assist it wouldn't work. To find out more do a search on google for the BMW SES module and the TCU.

My missus was in the car waiting while I popped into the shops. She was messing around and got the SMS up and started reading through, the guy was clearly having an affair... one number was his wife talking about tea on the table for him and kids etc... the other regular number was his bit on the side - I got in trouble for my comments "she sounds like fun, i've got her number too!"

Hi Nujon

A Resler is an interface that connects to the IBUS. There is a cable that plugs into the CD changer (if you have one installed) and you pllug this into the interface (small circuit board). You then connect your interface via serial cable of USB to a laptop with Navcoder software installed and you can edit options like enabiling TV on the move as well as VR (if available) and control some of the light module options. This is the link for the resler http://www.reslers.de/IBUS/ and this is the link to get the software http://www.siegenthaler.co.nz/navcoder/index.htm

Navcoder is 20 Euros and the Resler is 40 Euros. If you get chance to go to the meet you can see one in action.

Found a couple of the daughter's 4 - 5 year old, cast-off Motorola mobiles (ones a Razor or sumatt and the other, sumatt else) - both readily pair with the X5 and transfer the address book but no SMS

Anyone got a facelift X5 with SMS working and if so, what fone are you using please?

Try a SonyEricsson.

The k750i and K800i will both transfer SMS. Did for me.

You'll find the SE's are very compatible but these in particular have no problems - age of OEM technology and age of phone (both similar).

Yup. As said, Sony Ericsson k800i - absolutely 100% compatible, downloads full phone book and sms. I bought two new "old stock" for around £40 each when I bought my first X and realised that older Bluetooth technology will NOT work fully on brand new model phones.....as I tend to keep my cars for a while I bought two of the phones..... Pair easily and work brilliantly.

Cradles available - I have one - phone just lives in the car. Easy peasy.

Thanks CondorX5 - noted. I take it then that the SMS 'read' function is reliant upon the architecture of the fone and not simply an enabled feature of the OBD?

Yes, if the phone is fully compat with the BT the SMS will come up like the phone book does, there is no place to enable / disable the feature. Its read only, no send.

Well just fitted a v.g.c. Sony K800i + OEM cradle - pairs OK, transfers full address book OK, works OK - but no SMS transfer to the OBD (in fact no SMS menu present on the OBD) - unless I'm missing something, SMS must require a variant ULF module which no doubt was + £££ option - maybe the TOR 4.8s had such a module as standard ?
