Severely Worn Front Offside Tyre

Post by MattX » Mon Jul 17, 2017 6:29 pm

Hi folks,

I found my front offside tyre had worn through to the wire on the inside edge at the weekend.
Any idea what can have that effect?

It had the MOT on May 13th and it was a bit worn.  He pointed it out but passed it. Only done about 1k miles in those 2 months at worst.

Tracking error would be the most likely.  Either incorrectly set by the factory or knocked out of kilter by a pothole or similar.

Can the tyre shop fix that? The
Nearside is a bit worn as well, again on the inner rim.

I do live on a shitty pot hole ridden road.

If both sides are showing signs then tracking is the likely cause.  You need to get a proper 4-wheel alignement done, preferably on pro-kit such as a Hunter system (check if your tyre shop has that).

Just so I am clear - what is a hunter system and why does the X3 need it over a normal set up that most tyre places have?

When I had my E46 the same shop put it on their rig and told me it was all lined up ok. I was quite happy as I'd changed most of the front components over the years myself.

A tyre shop is never going to say "no, we can't take your money for that" lol.

I believe a 'Hunter' system uses a laser to align the wheels front to rear as well as on the axle itself.  Many members on here refer to getting 4-wheel alignment because the car uses AWD.  There are other laser systems around however 'Hunter' gets mentioned time and again - hence my suggesting it based on what is on the Forum.

The E46 being RWD doesn't need it.  I also have an E46 and have only ever had that done at the rear due its habit of eating rear springs!

I took it there as it was wandering all over the road and thought it was out of alignment. Turned out the back shocks were shot to bits. Turned out to be a free of charge fault find  :))

When I had our x5 serviced at PMW at Chelmsford, they picked up that I had the chords showing on the inner rear. Told me it's a known trait and that it needed replacing asap. No mention of 'how about we check it out'? So Not all bad !!!

Definitely worth the computerised Hunter alignment.  The excessive toe in can be adjusted easily -the Xes have such a wide tolerance spec from BMW that it needs a bit of tweaking to reduce the toe in.  You can check for Hunter equipped places on alignmycar.com.    Should check it every 6-12 months apparently - some places will put it on the computer and only charge if you need the alignment changing. Costs anout £60 in our area.

Useful link Condor  :)

Shows the BMW Bodyshop attached to my Dealer has the kit which is handy.

My 2 new tyres haven't arrived yet so not had a chance to get them fitted. I spoke to the shop on the phone yesterday about getting alignment checked and his response was almost identical. "BMW's all do it"
My 330 didn't.
I don't believe one of the biggest manufacturers in the world would make a car that runs tyres down to death trap levels in no time at all. I've had the car (from used) for 14 months / 10k miles. They were good as new when I got it.

What sort of cost would you expect from a correct alignment vs just tracking?
I think he said it would be about £35 to have the front wheels aligned - if they needed aligning.

£60-80 I would have thought.  BMW will charge more.

The X cars are known for it, but certainly not 'all BMWs' and like you our 330d has only had it done after a spring failure.

Neither my E53 nor X6 have tracking issues but there are plenty of X drivers on here who have found issues and possibly most commonly due to wear or 'playing' by previous owners.
