Double glazed vs single

Post by x5e53 » Thu Jul 06, 2017 5:48 am

Hi,

Will double glazed window panes (1 per door) fit into the slots/runners for a e53 designed for single paned windows? I.e. is it a straight swap?
On the 7 series, you need to install different trim pieces as the glass was considerably thicker.

Hi

I don't know but would expect it to be different .

To confirm this it's worth checking www.realoem.com and from that you should see if there are different part numbers for the trim.

Hi

You will need new slots and panels - NOT a plug'n play thing to do !

If the windows are a easy change over, would the existing motors be able too handle additional weight of moving the windows up and down ?? On the 7 series i would think that they must have slightly bigger motors.

Also i am trying to rack my brain what advantage are you looking at gaining by the upgrade,as i cannot work it out.

Erm no.

I need to replace 1 glass pane as its cracked.
Local scrapy has all 4 for 30quid. But they are double glazed.
I wanted to see if it would be a straight swap as its a cheap price.

So just buy all the bits tbat go with it to make it a straight swap. Still begs the question why the one in the scrappy is double glazed. Weird spec and I dont recall it being an optional extra, but I might be wrong. Believe it or not it has been known to happen

Double glazing was an option when I was speccing mine in 2004.  I really could not see what real purpose it would serve unless it also came with added sound insulation and 10" of fibreglass wrap!  It wasn't cheap either!
