Install this retrofit yesterday and everything looks OK.. The compass indicator changed a few times before got stuck at NW... So I did the reset and set the zone to 8 (Malaysia) and did multiple circles clockwise and anti-clock (below 7km/h) but still stuck in C.

Problem solved... after hours of driving around town..

Simplest way in the future is just to drive around in a circle to calibrate it as you did and it should have worked.  I used a roundabout locally when mine 'got lost'

There was an optional factory option to have a rearview mirror with inbuilt digital compass -I think for 2004/5 models or thereabouts.  Wasn't expensive, about £75 or so.  Some topspec cars came with it already specced like the 4.8is.  Its quite a nifty thing. I assume someone sourced one and retrofitted ? 

Got it in my X6 and 3-series too.  Option code S4NAA.

Yup.  Part number matches E53 to 2006 on Realoem.

I retrofitted the compass mirror to my 2002 4.4, bought it on the American ebay site and shipped it in in 2006.
Cotswold BMW kindly set it up for free.
