Rear Brake Discs and pads recomendations and price

Post by CondorX5 » Sun Jun 11, 2017 11:44 am

My E70 40d has just has its "visual inspection" (ripoff but has to be done to keep warranty going) by BMW who claim one of the rear discs is "minimum depth" although pads still meaty. Idrive shows fronts and rears still have around 35000 miles left.    Brakes work perfectly.

Dealer quote for rear pads and discs was a crazy £460,  a quick look on ECP and Ebay shows rear discs (pagid or minex) under £100 a pair, so a huge disparity in price really.  National quoted £335 using their 20% voucher.

What is a reasonable ballpark figure using decent /OEM discs and pads?    I am sure those quotes are a bit high......

I got a quote from an indy for front disks and pads after finding a wobble under braking which turned out to be a warped disc. The quote was not a kick in the butt away from £500.
I decided to go for Brembo discs and pads from eurocarparts and fitted them myself. These cost around £250 and fitted in a couple of hours as I like to take my time cleaning everything before fitting.
Obviously I could have bought cheaper disks and pads but even then for buying top quality stuff it would still leave £250 for labour and if they took the same length of time as me (which they wouldn't) it would be £125 per hour.

It all depends how competent / confident you are with DIY
For brakes, I'd stick with Pagid, Textar or Ate the below is taken from Ecp

I guess the rest of the price mark up would be labour. Expect 1-2 hours depending on how the hand brake behaves.

Personally, I DIY most things.

::)Oops - I'd did edit!

Good call on checking realoem, though it suggests 320x20 discs so the above should be good

For some more grist to the mill I paid £360 inclusive for front discs and pads two years ago. That's for 08 3.0 sd, disc diameter approx 14.5 inches.

That's at my local absolutely excellent BMW indy, H&C, in Maidstone. They put 2 guys on the job and it was done whilst I waited. Parts were in stock.

So £335 fitted seems ok, depends on what parts they use of course.    Am going to check with local trusted family garage first as well (non BMW but able to do quite a bit without ripping anyone off!). Its not urgent as the pads are pretty meaty still, but still want to get it done in the not-too-distant future.

Maybe source the parts yourself and get the garage to fit them, you could order online and get ECP to deliver them to your local garage. Then at least you know what make has been fitted.

I understand that to replace the rear discs requires the electric handbrake to be electricaly retracted, which is done via the OBC. It can be would back manually but means taking part of the motor housing to bits. This may be why the price is a bit high. £335 seems like a good price :)
