going on a long journey soon in the diesel,  wondered what speed is the best for most mpg , not something ive monitored as do very little miles and not yet been for a long run, 300 miles round trip it will be. Trouble i think though in these cars is the temptation to go mad and let it rip, i dont see many BMWs sticking to most mpg speeds )

The best I ever saw in mine was 35-36mpg coming 270 miles back from Manchester at 56mph.  I will NEVER do it again.  These cars are designed to be used - or as my other half says 'Drive it like you stole it.....'  >:D

Agreed, for a few mpg difference (which could easy be wiped out by a small chunk of traffic), it's not worth the faff to haul as slowly, just get on your merry way and enjoy the extra time at the other end. 300 miles at 60 mph is 5 hrs, at 70 it's less than 4.25ish hrs, so the 45 mins has to be worth an extra gallon of derv/petrol?

If driving like Miss Daisies Chauffeur gives you pleasure you will enjoy your trip if not it will be purgatory as X5 Sport has already said. You brought the car to enjoy so enjoy it.
 
Get a V8 that will stop you worrying about MPG you just know there isn't any !!

Or if after MPG you could go for the X5 alternative and hire say a Nissan Leaf as quite a few on here have them on here as a daily driver and have bee surprised how good they are.

As X5Sport said the best they got was about 35mpg, and that is good but you are cruising about. As Greydog says with a petrol it's a lot lower, on my E53 once I got 31.3 but it was very hard word doing 50mph, most of the time it was 18-23, on my new E70 petrol car does similar but it's a weekend car.

The daily driver does between 36-40 on the commute mostly in traffic turns that's a fiat 1.4 not an X5  ) but I wouldn't want to drive 300 miles in it I'd rather take the X5 everyday.

my 3.0 is showing 15 mpg at the moment ...... bearing in mind it's lpg I think it's actually going to be worse than that

You must be working that 3.0l hard, I hover round 17mpg on LPG driving steady, on long journeys driving much harder the MPG generally goes up by 1 or2 MPG. I suppose that's because of lack of stop start driving.

it's mainly around town .... tbh I don't really watch the mpg reading I tend to watch how many miles I've done around the 200-225 per tank is what I get

I get the best MPG at approx 70 mph - 34mpg,  at 80+ mph I still get 30 miles a gallon (UK).

At under 50mph the fuel economy plummets ...

As they say above - enjoy it & drive it like you stole it.

To preserve the Gear-Box, & drive shaft UJs, I don't do rapid standing starts, I use the power to overtake & give it a push at 70mph+

A good Peddle-Down thrashing every now & then keeps the CAT & sensors blasted clean & keeps her smoke free.

Having had several V8's I budget for 15 anything above that is a bonus and my neighbours will never think I have come home in a taxi.
The 4.4 was on LPG and was great fun until it got squashed.

Plus the most important part of driving a V8, those of us who drive them should never lose sight of the fact that we are encouraging others to plant tree's so we are saving the planet.

I have had over 40mpg in E53 2004 3.0 D Auto. Measured not off the computer but brimful to brimful on the tank and mileage on the odometer. Empty motorway, steady driving, no harsh braking, circa 70mph, tyre pressures good, unladen vehicle etc

Thanks for all the input,  i was simply wondering,  i dont intend daudling as dont want to give Bm drivers a bad name  ) it dosesnt get out often apart from round town,  i nearly did buy  4.4 but the seller didnt smell right if you know what i mean.
Ended up with 3.0d as right car for money and wife likes Blue and it seems well fast for a big lump. Without a doubt the best car i have had in 35 years of driving. i shall join the rest of the outside lane Beemers next week.
