Really gutted for you, really bad news and has got me seriously concerned that mine could also be nicked as well due too the condition of it,of course it has the factory alarm on it and has me wondering what else i can do as additional deterrents,of course its fully insured but i doubt that i would find another as good in a hurry.

Did yours just have the factory alarm and are these a weak point in the security of the X5 ??

Once again gutted for you and hope you get it back in one piece.

All the alarms and best security measures in the world won't stop them, if they are professionals and they want your car they will get it. Unfortunately they broke into my house why I was sleeping and stole my keys, good job for them they didn't wake me because I would now be sat in a prison cell for killing them.

I've been advised by the police that if within 48hours the car is not located then the chance of it ever being found deminishes and recovery rate after a week is about 10% chance of it being recovered. To be totally honest knowing these f@@kers have my car and not knowing what they have been doing with it makes me not want to have it back anyway.

I know on the e53 models you can setup on the console unit a code that needs inputting to start the engine, sure you must be able to do the same on the e70.

Like I said i know it's available on the e53 not sure about the e70. It's called extended immobiliser function where you can set a 4 digit passcode of your choice which must be punched in every time you want to start the car.

It can be setup via the computer in MID* via the BC button I believe, refer to the vehicle handbook.

Be warned though, I never opted to use this feature because I heard horror stories where owners have forgotten the codes or for what ever reason the code not working and then they where unable to start the car even after doing an emergency deactivation, I don't know how true this is because I'm not an expert on it or have never used this feature.

Just asked for some details about a Cobra tracking unit for my X5,could well get this installed next week, just awaiting a reply as if they fit them at a home address or it needs taking over to a shop for fitting.Peace of mind more than anything else.

Also just thought that my wheels which are the 20'' ones with the large rear tyres would also be desirable as well,so then thought that i carry my locking wheel nut socket in the glove compartment,so taken that out and hidden it so no one apart from my wife has a clue of the location.Easy target i guess if i found a brick inside the car one morning and it siting on a pile of bricks minus the wheels.

Of course as has been mentioned if they want it they will take it but at least its making it harder for them, and the tracker well that should improve the odds of finding it again i would have thought.Well thats the theory anyway.

Look for 'Code' under the menu settings on the Nav screen.  It's also in the handbook.  Don't forget whatever code you use though!

Having a tracker for me is not really an option, as much as I love my car once it's stolen I wouldn't want it back, although this incident as made me think what better security options I can put into place to make it more difficult for them to steal in the first place

You have my sympathies, I know how you feel and hope your resolution is not as drawn out as mine was.

I now have a Disklok on current X3 as the police and insurance say they are the best devices to put off the chancers but if they really want your car nothing will stop them.

Since mine was stolen off my drive in November '15 I have fitted security cameras outside, security lights and the disklok.

I do not know who you are insured with but don't be afraid too get the Ombudsman involved if they don't give you a proper valuation. I had to after they offered my £7k I eventually got £10,800.

Hope you had no valuables in your car but if you did claim off your house insurance if you need to.

Lastly I hope you were not as stupid as me and had your credit cards in the car...I am the one who was in the press last year with the contactless fraud cards used 9 months after my car was stolen.

Here are my threads on the subject in case it helps you:

This is the disklok I have:

My x5 came fitted with an aftermarket sat-nav unit thing and re-wired all the way from the back of the car.
Talk about spaghetti junction.
