At a guess it could be the self levelling suspension system.  Could be faulty sensor on either axle, failed airbag (you'll see odd ride heights), failed compressor, leak in the airlines, blown fuse or a spurious error (caused by flat batteries on the E53 so may occur in the same way on the E70).

Thanks i had a leaking air spring on my E39 but it was 12 years old and just moved 3.5 tonnes of soil from my garden. Thank goodness the x5 is under bmw warranty.

So car was at main dealer this week and they diagnosed water ingress into a rear ride height sensor so will be replaced as a pair. They also found some cracks in some bushes so again will be replace FOC under warranty.

Its really refreshing to have a service agent who

1) returns phone calls
2) genuinely wants to help you as a customer
3) goes out of their way to accomodate your needs

So congrats to BMW Battersea for a really pleasant experience....(unlike Coopers Thames Ditton!)
