BMW Warranty Cost?
BMW Warranty Cost?
I have a BMW AUC Warranty with my 2012 X5, six months to run. Can anybody give me a rough idea of how much it will cost to renew this with a comprehensive BMW policy for a further 12 months please? The X5 will probably have about 70k miles on the clock by that time.
Would a Warranty Direct policy be any good...they have quoted around £900 for 24 months?
Many thanks.

I'm in the same boat & curious to find out cost ?
What was the level of cover with WD ?

Re: BMW Warranty Cost?
Depends upon the excess you want to take, but assume at least £1k, and possibly up to £1.5k
If you pay it monthly then unless Insurance Tax changes the premium stays the same year after year.
Warranty Direct is OK but they don't pay for diagnostics and will insist on a recent service having been done. If any issue is a straightforward one then you will be fine, but if it needs diagnostic work then at £200 per hour that gets expensive!
WD paid £3,700 for my E53 gearbox to be done and it cost me £150 for diagnostics and excess. When the £10 fuel pump relay failed I got hit with a £210 diagnostic charge as well as the excess.
Like all warranties it is the fine print that matters. BMW should shortly offer you the warranty with prices and options.

Re: BMW Warranty Cost?
I think most people have not had great experiences with WD or most other third party warranty companies, X5Sport being one of the exceptions. I think pvr had quite a negative experience where very little of quite a sizeaable genuine claim was covered. As is usual, you often get what you pay for in these circumstances.
I have an existing extended BMW warranty on my old 4.8is and it has paid for itself over and over. It is still in place despite the car having covered over 130k miles-granted, it is now covering less than the previous absolutely everything, but very recently covered a full steering rack replacement, sat nav unit replaced (again) and radio and DSP amp replaced, and electric mirror mechanisms.
My 40d is under AUC warranty for a few more months and I will extend it with BMW -the monthly payments stay the same for as long as you keep the warranty in place unless insurance tax or VAT increases. Given these are twin turbo cars with known failures and a host of other expensive repairs all three figures and upwards, I would feel like I was playing russian roulette if I did not have a decent warranty in place, one I know is likely to pay up if the car is kept in the bmw network for servicing within bmw specs.
I would not gamble or waste money on a third party warranty like WD. The other way to cover unexpected (or with X5s, unwelcome but expected!) costs is to put a regular amount into an emergency fund.

This is bang on !
My warranty renewal was 1500 so I didn't bother.
I might look into WD though would you say it's worth while and is the Claim process pain free ?

Re: BMW Warranty Cost?
I tried to get a price from the BMW site but it states as I have a warranty still in place to call them. I'll call them soon to get an idea of cost.
The WD policy looks not bad although as X5Sport states diagnostics are not included which could prove costly.
I suppose like most things you get what you pay for.
Thanks for replies.

Re: BMW Warranty Cost?
I note comments from Condor re fixed monthly costs on existing policies subject to vat & IPt rates. No idea if there is typically an increase in rates for renewals that occur over certain mileages...e.g. 60k. Perhaps Condor or someone else may be able to clarify.
Below figures based on someone posing as a new mondial warranty customer in scenario as if buying a private sale E70 with mileage over 60k.
For illustration only.....accuracy not guaranteed. Anyone buying a warranty should check with provider or do other research.
ANNUAL PAYMENT
Comprehensive Warranty with Emergency Service
Excess: £100
£2188.94 per year
MONTHLY PAY AS YOU GO?
Comprehensive Warranty with Emergency Service
Excess: £100
£205.94 each month
Basically I crunched in data for an E70 with 74k miles.
I seem to recall someone allegedly saying there may a mileage related price hike for renewals/inceptions over 60k miles.
Having spent thousands to keep the E53 healthy, (approaching £2k p/a one year), for me the maths cannot be ignored.
Warranties give peace of mind but buyer is arguably placing a bet with provider that repair costs in ownership will exceed total premium costs plus excess payments within same period.
I am not advising members against cover but it obviously comes at a price. Some have paid less for cover plus excess payments than they would have paid at dealership for repairs. Others will tell of trouble free motoring.
Incidentally I made an enquiry re used E53 today & got a quote for mileage over 60k he premium for that was the same right down to the pound as E70 fone off figure.
Some might argue that £205 per month might be better spent towards a finance or lease deal on newer metal that gets problems fixed f.o.c.

Re: BMW Warranty Cost?
My WD cover is £159 per quarter and is the top cover offered for a 7 year old/40k mile car. I opted for BMW main dealer labour cover, and an additional new for old cover on any part that fails (£50 per year) Without this there is a sliding scale of the percentage of the cost of the parts they are replacing.
As a comparison, the same cover for my Passat CC R36 was £190 per quarter (same level cover)
WD cover everything except the suspension and A/C

Thanks for sharing.
A forum search will show interesting mixed discussion re WD & other cover....including from some who have claimed or tried to do so.
With any warranty product worth checking small print, excesses, percentage contributions, betterment payments relative to mileage/age of vehicle if/where appropriate.

Re: BMW Warranty Cost?
Thankfully not.
But it was the deciding factor for me getting a 40d rather than the 30d I'd originally planned.
One thing I should have mentioned.
If you go the WD/BMW labour route, make sure that there is an approved dealer you trust near to you. Using an approved dealer means WD have an agreement with them and they are happy to invoice/get paid directly, so no paying yourself and trying to claim back.
Most Stratstone BMW seem to be in the scheme.
