when you pop the boot open via the key, does your hydrolics open the boot lid all the way up or does it just release the latch ? is there a way of making the boot lid go up like the lexus's or some other cars ?

On my E53 it just released the catch, I have the powered trunk/boot option on my leased E70 and it opens the lid all the way (and you can select how far you want it to open via iDrive)
Not sure if powered boot was an option on better specced E53s.

Power lift was never an option on the E53. The lock is a soft close type so you never need to slam it shut. A gentle push is all it needs. The E53 tailgate is a modified Range Rover design (BMW owned them at the time) and that did not have a powered option.
Power lift became a cost option (initially) on the E70 but I think is now standard as it is on the E71 and a few other BMWs.
You would have to find some kind of lift system to fit the E53 if wanted a power lift option. Never seen one, but there might be a kit out there.

thanks guys, its not really a power lift system that i was after, i just wasnt sure if the hydrolic rams should be powerful enough to push the lid up all the way once the latch was released.. nevermind ha

On a related note, I've managed to flatten my battery by accidentally hitting the boot release and it spent all night trying 'catch' the boot to close it!

When did power lift become std on E70. I have an 08/08 3.0sd E70, When i remotely unlock the bootlid it just releases the latch but have to lift it manually.
