derv ??

Post by Glen » Thu Mar 16, 2017 7:47 pm

Hi
i'm just wondering if anybody has any thoughts on the premium diesel.
On other forums a lot of people always seemed to knock "supermarket diesel"
They would only use shell V power any thoughts or experiences of different DERVS would be appreciated

I use Shell Nitro+ in mine.
A few years ago I did 100k miles in a Navara and logged each tank for brand and mpg.
The outcome was, that the Shell/BP ultra diesel gives a better mpg value than regular diesel.

I guess its down to personal choice, but does the extra cost of premium diesel make up for the extra MPG? Tbh I haven't noticed much in the difference in MPG and power between supermarket and top end fuel, I guess the only difference might show up on an emissions test?

I don't have a lot of choice as we only have supermarket's to buy fuel from round here.
I put  2-EHN and some mineral 2-stroke in with my diesel and have been doing it for years.
There are loads of forum discussions on this subject.
Personally i think it run's better and a bit quieter with it in the fuel.

As has been reported on here before, the only difference between 'Supermarket' and Premium (which some supermarkets also sell) is the additives the tanker driver puts in.  It all comes from the same refineries and fuel depots regardless of tanker labelling.  You can buy supermarket fuels and put your own additives in if you wish.

I have never used Premium other than once to check the hype and have run Diesel engined cars on ordinary fuel since 1985.

So I guess which ever is the most convenient
What does the additives do ie.more power, clean the engine and also does the engine start to rely on it ???

I don't think the engines 'rely' on them.  Mainly additives are there to clean the engines and injectors and perhaps improve general burn characteristics.

There are versions of premium diesel with a higher Cetane rating (equivalent of Octane in Petrol units) but how big a difference versus cost will be a personal choice.

You can get official additives from BMW to run through the engine every so often.  About £20 per tankful.  I use them maybe once a year as I only do 5-6,000 miles in mine.

£8 delivered per tank from Cotswold BMW on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262890561198
They recommend to do 2 consecutive tanks of fuel.
I've just ordered 2  :D
