Is it complete loss of reverse? Do the reverse lights come on and can you feel the box engage but just no/or reluctant drive?

Are there any odd noises or rattles from the box, or any reluctance for the car to want to stop - a bit like trying to bring a car to a halt without taking it out of gear. Any warning lights or error messages?

Have you tried moving the gear selector quickly between D and R? There is a function that allows you to rock the transmission for getting out of snow and you can rapidly switch between D & R without needing the shift lock.

Loss of reverse is one of the warnings for gearbox failure, but NOT in all cases. It can also be the box getting in a tizzy for a moment and then sorting itself out. Sometimes it clears all by itself after allowing the car to go to sleep (16 mins approx), and it can also be caused by a battery issue. Don't write the box's obituary yet.

Oh cr@p, sorry to hear this news. I think you probably need to be careful choosing a box on fleabay as you have no idea how they've been used or abused and they may be on the point of failing, or have already done so. May be trying to teach Granny, so I'll stop stating the bleedin obvious!! You'll need a ZF type GA6HP26Z 4-wheel drive variant I think.

There's a auto transmission shop in Dartford - JT Automatics - who may be able to do a rebuild at a reasonable price. The parts aren't bad, it's the labour needed that adds up. My full rebuild was 17.5 hours, but I had a lot more wrong!! Oil pump, torque converter and all the clutch packs were wrecked. Clutch repair kit was £250, called a major overhaul kit.
