Banging noise under acceleration

Gentlemen,
I have a 2002 3.0i X5 and under acceleration there is a banging noise which I think is coming from the back of the vehicle. I suspect that it is the transfer box chain but before I commence the tricky job of replacement can anyone confirm that this is the likely cause.
By starting off very gently I can avoid the noise but it needs to be fixed.
Thank you in anticipation.

Transfer box is beside you rather than at the rear. Could be a suspension bushing issue - known to wear out at that age.
An alternatives could prop shaft support bearing, exhaust, or even rear diff. I'm assuming nothing is loose below the boot floor? Stranger things have happened - like a loose battery.

Hi
I think I would go for the easy diy one of checking the exhaust rubbers first because athe exhaust can knock if worn, and as it would move when under acceleration.
Its not too costly to fix remember to check both rear boxes and also centre box as that has 3 hangers according to realoem

I had the same with a former car, was the big rubber circular thing that connects drive safe half's (like The crush drive on a bike), had a little bit or movement and knocked under hard acc. Slowly it didn't do it. 4 or 6 bolts later, sorted.
Not sure if pertinent to your motor though :'(

Firstly no one noticed its an E53 in the F15 section??? O:-)
Secondly I would suggest the rear sub-frame bushes....
