MPG low & Autobox

Morning chaps,
I know that this topic has been done to death but I'm really starting to lose my rag with the car now. I do approx 100 miles a week in my car at a cost of £30 for fuel. The MPG very rarely gets above 22mpg when not driving on the motorway. On the motorway it creeps up to about mid 20's at the most.
The car seems to hold onto the gears up to approx 2.5K rpm (not in sport mode) - so for example, if I'm driving in a 40 zone, instead of changing up it will keep the car in a lower gear between 2.5K and 3K rpm.
Out of interest I tried driving this week changing gears manually and managed to get 29 mpg out of the car which was pretty good.
is there anyway I can change the characteristics of the gearbox to adapt to a more economical style of driving?
Thanks in advance,
Tom
