I have inpa and dis with correct cable. Just had abs midule repaired due to abs trifecta lights , but now I'm getting faults 5A brief power interruption and lws slider fault.  Tried to recalibrate the steering angle sensor but can't seem to get access to it in either software , also can't get access to the abs module directly although I can access faults from it ????
Very puzzling !!

you say you have the correct cable but i wonder where you got it from ??
reason i ask is i thought i had the right cable but it turned out mine needed to have pins 7 & 8 joined for the cable to work properly on my x5
i ended up soldering a switch into the cable so i could use it on other cars too

easiest way to check is run a continuity test on those 2 pins

Got it from cableshack , checked with them and it's the right cable.

I've used the cable a few times and got back info such as speed sensor fault, steering angle sensor fault etc , so it must be communicating with the module , but I just can't access it directly via inpa to recalibrate it . Just get an ugh fault when i try.

thats whats making me think that the pins arent connected
the x5 needs both pins to work properly but with just one it will get some info from the car

Do I need to take the cable apart to check then ?

if you've got a multi-meter you can just touch the probes onto the pins and do it that way (thats the way i did)
