I recently changed the handle carrier on my car and disconnected the airbag, now the light is on.  Do I have to take it to a dealer to clear or will an aftermarket reader be able to clear it?

Try the after market first. If they cant clear it they may not charge you but if you go to a main dealer they will charge you either way. I would assume a kings ransom too.
